USF’s Fernandes Tabbed American Men’s Golf Player of the Week



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – USF senior Rigel Fernandes was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Week after recording a Top 5 finish at the Valspar Collegiate, the league announced on Wednesday.

Fernandes (213: 71-72-70) finished two shots off the lead at the prestigious Valspar Collegiate at The Floridian in Palm City, Florida. He tied for fourth in a field of 78 that included 11 ranked teams. Fernandes’ 1-under 70 in the final round on Tuesday moved him up four spots on the leaderboard. He recorded the 11th Top 10 finish of his career at the event and was one of only nine players to finish at even par or better.

Cincinnati
 • Senior Jared O’Kelley matched his career-best three-round tournament score at the Lone Star Invitational, carding a 7-under 209 and tying for sixth overall…The Bearcats finished ninth as a team at the event.
 • Cincinnati returns to action Apr. 3-4 at the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Mississippi.

East Carolina
• East Carolina finished sixth at the weather-shortened General Hackler Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina…Junior Tim Conover led the Pirates after tying for 15th individually.

• East Carolina next hosts the East Carolina Intercollegiate on Apr. 3-4 at Brook Valley Golf and Country Club.

Houston
• Junior Michael Perras recorded a pair of Top 20 finishes at the rain-shortened Border Olympics (T-4th) and the Valspar Collegiate (T-20th)…Houston finished a season-best second place as a team at the Border Olympics.

• The Cougars return to the links Mar. 25-28 competing at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Charleston, South Carolina.

Memphis
• Sophomore JC Campbell paced Memphis during action at the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Florida…The Tigers placed 14th overall as a team.

• The Tigers next compete at the Old Waverly Collegiate Apr. 3-4 in West Point, Mississippi.

USF
• Senior Rigel Fernandes and freshman Kyle Flexsenhar led the team with nine birdies apiece at the Valspar Collegiate Mar. 19-21 at The Floridian…The Bulls have two events remaining before the conference championship.

• USF is back in action Apr. 3-4 at the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Mississippi.

Temple
• The Owls finished 13th overall at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate Mar. 19-21 in Williamsburg, Virginia…Redshirt sophomore John Barone (222) led Temple at the event.

• The Owls’ next tournament is the Furman Intercollegiate Mar. 24-26 in Greenville, South Carolina.
