UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Led by a new American Athletic Conference Championship record 30 points from senior guard Feyonda Fitzgerald, the No. 2 seed Temple Owls took down No. 10 seed Houston 67-58 in Saturday night’s quarterfinal matchup.
The Owls used 12 first half points from Fitzgerald to take a three-point advantage, 28-25, at the break. The first half was a tight affair that saw five score changes.
Temple opened the second half on a 7-2 run in the first three minutes to push their advantage to 10 points. The Cougars were unable to build a comeback, as Temple built on the lead in the second half, and finished off a nine-point victory.
Fitzgerald, Alliya Butts (19 points) and Tanaya Atkinson (16 points) combined for 65 of Temple’s 67 points tonight.
Jacqueline Blake and Angela Harris scored 15 points apiece for Houston, while Serithia Hawkins chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Temple will move on to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of No. 6 SMU and No. 3 USF at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday (ESPNU/WatchESPN).
