Orlando, Fla. – East Carolina earned a first round win at the 2017 Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday. Cincinnati, SMU, USF and Tulsa all earned quarterfinal wins at the 2017 Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday.
No. 8 East Carolina 4, No. 9 UConn 1
No. 8 seed East Carolina produced a 4-1 win over No. 9 seed UConn in a morning match at the USTA National Campus.
The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Kasey Countee and Ronny Georgi won 6-2 over the Huskies’ Jacob Appleton and Brady Flanagan, while Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt tallied a 6-4 victory over Hank Hill and Arnuad Valentin of UConn.
East Carolina built a 3-0 lead after straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles by Vlad Anghel and Ronny Georgi. UConn got on the board Jack McLister’s 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6.The Pirates clinched it with Fredric Lehfeldt’s three-set victory at No. 4.
The Pirates advance to the quarterfinals and will meet top-seeded USF Friday at 9 a.m. ET/ 8 a.m. CT.

The Golden Hurricane took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No.3 spots. Natalia Serrano got things started for UCF with a win at the No.2 singles spot, but Tulsa quickly struck back with three straight-set wins from Martha Matoula, Marcelina Cichon, and Mahitha Dadireddy at the No. 5, No.6 and No.3 positions.
The Golden Hurricane is set to play No. 4 seed Cincinnati in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.

The Bearcats picked up wins at the top two doubles positions to earn doubles point against the Tigers, including a 6-3 win at No. 1 by the tandem of Lauren Bellinger and Kelly Poggensee-Wei. Harley Hutchinson scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 6 singles spot for the Bearcats to make it 2-0, while Caroline Morton was a 6-3, 6-4 winner from the No. 4 spot to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.
Marta Morga put Memphis on the board scoring a 6-4,6-4 at the No. 3 spot, but Cincinnati clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win from Kelly Poggensee-Wei at the No. 2 spot.
The Bearcats are set to play top seeded Tulsa in Friday’s semifinals at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.

The Mustangs claimed the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to capture the doubles point to start the match. Macie Elliot and Liza Buss scored a 7-5 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Mary Wright and Dasha Sharapova earned a win at No. 3.
East Carolina scored a point with a singles win from Ceclia Ruiz at the No. 1 spot. SMU picked up straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to claim the win as Wright emerged as a winner in both singles and doubles. She took a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will face No. 7 seed USF in the semifinals at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on Friday.

The Bulls produced 6-4 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to earn the doubles point against the Green Wave. Juliana Cardoso and Jessica Cortes-Chaves got things started for the Bulls scoring a victory over Elena Miller and Sofia Kurtz at No. 2. The Bulls clinched the doubles point with a victory from Ana Roman Dominguez and Nicole Dzenga at the No. 3 spot.
USF started off singles play with wins at the No.1 and No. 2 spots to build a 3-0 lead, thanks to straight-set victories from Roman Dominguez and Vera Bessonova. Tulane fought back with a win from Elena Muller at the No. 4 spot, but the Bulls clinched the victory with a 7-6 (4), 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot from Olga Martinez.
The Bulls are set to play No. 3 seed SMU in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
