East Carolina Sweeps Weekly Baseball Awards



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending April 23.

Charlie Yorgen • Sr. • INF • East Carolina
Yorgen led the East Carolina offense as the Pirates posted a 3-1 week with a series win at Cincinnati. Yorgen batted .684 (13-for-19) with multiple hits in every contest, scored five runs and drove in five.  Against UNC Wilmington, Yorgen reached base six times (five hits and a walk) and finished the week with a double, triple and home run. He also posted an on base percentage of .700 and slugging percentage of 1.000.

Evan Kruczynski • Sr. • LHP • East Carolina
Kruczynski picked up his first win of the season throwing eight shutout innings in a 6-0 win over Cincinnati. Kruczynski only allowed one hit, retiring 24 of 25 batters, including 22-straight. He also struck out six batters without giving up a walk and induced 15 groundouts.
 
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL   
Robby Howell • Sr. • RHP • UCF
Howell threw a complete game against UConn only allowing one run in an 8-1 win over the Huskies. Howell surrendered four hits and struck out 11 batters to guide UCF to the series-opening victory.
 
John Toppa • So. • OF • UConn
Toppa hit .412 (7-for-17) for UConn posting a hit in all five games for the Huskies this week. Toppa scored five runs and drew two walks, while stealing two bases.
 
Tyler Bielamowicz • Fr. • OF/LHP • Houston
Bielamowicz hit .571 (4-for-7) in three games for the Cougars, driving in four runs and scoring three. The freshman reached base in four plate appearances with a hit and three walks in the series finale against Tulane. He also threw two-thirds of an inning in relief against Sam Houston State and did not allow a baserunner.
 
Luke Borders • Sr. • DH • USF
Borders led USF to a 3-1 with a team-high .529 batting average on the week. Borders scored three runs, hit a double and home run and posted six RBIs for the Bulls.
 
Corey Merrill • Sr. • RHP • Tulane
Merrill threw eight shutout innings in Tulane’s 7-1 win over Houston. Merrell allowed three hits, three walks and only two runners to reach scoring position.
