CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The No. 2 seed Houston shut out the No. 7 UConn, 7-0, in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon at the East Carolina Softball Complex. The Cougars advanced to the conference semifinals with the win and will face No. seed 6 East Carolina Thursday at 12:30 p.m. ET/ 11:30 a.m. CT.
The Cougars struck first with an RBI-double in the first from Kaylin Crumpton, followed by an RBI from freshman Arielle James in the second. Houston extended its lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly from Sarah Queen in the bottom of the third. Maya Thomas produced an RBI of her own in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Cougars (29-24) had one player with a multi-hit game in redshirt sophomore Sarah Barker (2-for-3). Five different Cougars connected on at least one hit in the victory.
UConn had five players that produced hits in Kiwi McDaniel, Carli Cutler, Emma Stanley, Chloe Kerns and Valerie Sadowl.
In the circle, Savannah Heebner (14-10) picked up the win for Houston while Katie Koshes fell to 8-8 with the loss for UConn.
