PROVIDENCE, R.I. – USF and Tulane advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships Friday, while UCF, SMU and Memphis fell in first-round action Friday.
The Bulls cruised to a 4-0 win against Duke, sending the Bulls to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the fourth straight year. Tulane held off Washington for a 4-2 win as the Green Wave reached the round of 32 for the second consecutive season.
USF 4, Duke 0
No. 22 USF, which won the American Athletic Conference Championship last week, continued its postseason run with a 4-0 win against No. 36 Duke in Athens, Georgia. The Bulls won three straight-set victories in singles, including a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 from American Player of the Year Sasha Gozun, while USF took two of the three doubles matches to claim the additional team point. USF advances to face either No. 12 Georgia or Florida A&M in Saturday’s second round.
Tulane 4, Washington 2
No. 29 Tulane advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship with a 4-2 win against No. 49 Washington in Austin, Texas. Ewan Moore clinched the win with a three-set victory at No. 2 singles, while Sebastian Rey and Chi-Shan Jao provided singles wins at No. 3 and No. 6. The Green Wave will face either No. 11 Texas or Presbyterian Saturday in the second round.
Louisville 4, UCF 3
No. 28 UCF and No. 42 Louisville battled in a back-and-forth match before the Cardinals scored a three-set win at No. 3 singles to end the Knights’ season. UCF built a 1-0 lead after the doubles round as the Knights scored a tiebreaker win at No. 3, but the Cardinals won a pair of straight-set singles matches to take a 2-1 lead. UCF’s Korey Lovett knotted the score at 2-2 after he rallied to win the final two sets at No. 1, and the Knights took a 3-2 lead when Mariano Porter was a 7-6 (7), 6-4 winner at No. 4. Louisville took the final two team points, however, with three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 3.
Mississippi State 4, SMU 0
SMU saw its 2017 season end with a 4-0 setback to No. 18 Mississippi State in first-round action in Norman, Oklahoma. The Mustangs fell behind after the doubles round, despite a 6-3 win at No. 1 from the tandem of Yates Johnson and Markus Kerner. The Bulldogs picked up three straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match, with victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6. SMU, which is No. 38 in the ITA national rankings, finished the season with a 13-12 record.
Oregon 4, Memphis 2
No. 24 Oregon was a 4-2 winner against No. 34 Memphis as the Ducks won the doubles point and three singles matches to end the Tigers’ season. Memphis’ Felix Rauch won at No. 6 and the Tigers’ Kai Lemke won at No. 3 to bring the Tigers within one at 3-2, but the Ducks took a three-set win at No. 2 to get the clinching point.
