HOUSTON, TEXAS – After two days of competition at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Cincinnati sits on top of the women’s standings and UConn leads the men’s competition at the Carl Lewis International Track Complex at the University of Houston.
Cincinnati had another strong day in the throwing events as Annette Echikunwoke won her second title of the meet in the shot put. Echikunwoke threw a 16.20m toss to give her another gold medal after winning the hammer throw on day one. Her counterpart on the men’s side, Macklin Tudor also won the shot put with a meet record throw of 18.90m.
The rest of the podium in the women’s shot put featured Divine Oladipo from UConn (15.82m) and Jhane’ Carter from UCF (15.50m). On the men’s side, Houston’s Cameron Cornelius finished in second (18.34m) and Adam Manns of East Carolina took third (17.66m).
The Bearcats also swept the heptathlon and decathlon events that finished Saturday afternoon. Naomi Urbano, the 2017 Indoor pentathlon champion, won the heptathlon with 5,003 points, including a win in the javelin with a mark of 38.55m. Alex Bloom took home gold in the decathlon with 7,401 points, finishing third in three events on Saturday.
East Carolina’s Aminah Ghaffar finished second with 4,893 points and SMU’s Anna Novosadova took third with 4,713 points in the pentathlon while Houston’s Nethaniel Mechler (7,374) and UConn’s Patrick Meyer (7,107) took second and third respectively in the pentathlon.
Houston owned the jumps today as Trumaine Jefferson jumped a meet record 7.87m in his first attempt, which would be good enough to win the event over teammate Antwan Dickerson who finished second with a mark of 7.86m. Cincinnati’s Austin Edwards took third with a mark of 7.59m. In the women’s long jump, Samiyah Samuels won the event with a meet-record jump of 6.588m. Cincinnati’s Kellsa Mbah finished second (6.32m) and East Carolina’s Cheyenne Hutchinson (6.22m) finished in third.
In the women’s javelin, Ashley Pryke earned Memphis 10 points with a throw of 55.18m to beat defending champion Daliadiz Ortiz from Tulane who threw a 53.50m. East Carolina’s Lauren Lubarski finished in third with a mark of 48.16m.
The men’s side saw another meet record fall as UConn’s Seth Zuidema threw a 70.22m throw to take the javelin crown. Michael Criticos from Memphis threw 68.10m for second and Zuidema’s teammate Kevin Foster finished in third with a mark of 63.72m.
The 3,000m steeplechase closed out the night on the track and on the women’s side, SMU’s Shanoah Souza pulled away at the end to win in a time of 10:19.93 to earn 10 points for the Mustangs. UConn’s Courtney Akerley finished second (10:26.44) and Tulsa’s Stacie Taylor came in third in a time of 10:29.13.
On the men’s side, Tulane’s Emmanuel Rotich took home gold with a time of 9:21.51. Rotich was followed by UConn’s Kyle Barber (9:22.46), who just held off Tulsa’s Benjamin Preisner (9:22.63).
Four events on both the men’s and women’s side had preliminaries to determine the fields for finals on Sunday. Houston’s Brianne Bethel was the fastest qualifier in the women’s 100m dash with a meet record time of 11.43. On the men’s side, Houston’s Eli Hall was the top qualifier, running a 10.11 and was one of six Cougars to qualify for Sundays final.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Jessica Duckett from Tulane posted the top time of 13.37 and Amere Lattin from Houston was tops in the men’s 110m hurdles, running a 13.79.
Cincinnati’s Bryana Robinson was the fastest woman in the 400m qualifiers, posting a time of 53.15. On the men’s side, Tulane’s Raymund Kibet set a meet record, running a 45.91 to finish as the top qualifier.
The final qualifier was the 1,500m race and on the women’s side, SMU’s Holly Archer finished in first with a time of 4:34.72. Tulsa’s Marc Scott was the top finisher in the men’s race with a time of 3:53.32.
The final day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin tomorrow at 3 PM ET/2 PM CT with the women’s high jump and will be streamed on the American Digital Network.
