SARASOTA, Fla. – UCF won its third straight American Athletic Conference Women’s Rowing Championship on Saturday. Competing at Nathan Benderson Park, the Knights took first place in all six races to sweep the regatta.

Competing in a steady tailwind, the Knights went under the seven-minute mark in all three varsity eight races. The UCF third varsity eight took first in 6:58.8, while the second varsity eight crossed the line in 6:34.5. In the final race of the day, the Knights varsity eight won by 2.4 seconds in a time of 6:24.8.

Victories in the third varsity four (7:28.6), second varsity four (7:39.6) and varsity four (7:22.2) helped set the stage for the Knights to collect the maximum 217 points. UCF is second team in conference history to sweep all six races; Louisville also achieved the feat in 2014.

The victory secured The American’s automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship for UCF. The Knights coaching staff, led by head coach Becky Cramer, was voted the conference’s coaching staff of the year by their peers.

Tulsa finished as the runner-up in five of six races to take second place overall, 28 points behind UCF. For the Golden Hurricane, it was their third consecutive year finishing second. Sacramento State and San Diego State tied for third, each earning 119 points; the Hornets won the tie-breaker, however, by virtue of their third-place finish in the varsity eight. UConn was one point in back of those two with 118 points. Temple and SMU finished the championship with 90 and 87 points, respectively.

UCF will compete at the 2017 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship May 26-28, at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
