USF, Tulane Fall In NCAA Second Round

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – One day after winning their respective opening-round matches of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships, USF and Tulane saw their seasons come to an end with second-round setbacks Saturday.

The Bulls, who had swept Duke in Friday’s tournament opener, fell to 12th-ranked Georgia, while the Green Wave fell to 10th-ranked Texas..

Georgia 4, USF 1
No. 22 USF came up short of its second straight NCAA round-of-16 appearance as the Bulls fell to No. 12 Georgia. USF, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the fourth straight year, was paced by Sasha Gozun, who was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles. Gozun will compete in the NCAA singles championship May 24-29 in Athens, Georgia.

Texas 4, Tulane 3
No 29 Tulane dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 10-ranked Longhorns as the Green Wave held a 3-1 lead in the team scoring before Texas staved off elimination to take the match. Tulane won the doubles point and was on the brink of clinching the match after Constantin Schmitz (at No. 1) and Luis Erienbusch (at No. 4) earned singles victories. But the Longhorns were able to withstand multiple match points at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots to rally for the win.

The American will have four entries in the individual singles and doubles rounds of the NCAA Championship, which take place May 24-29 in Athens, Georgia. Tulane’s Constantin Schmitz is The American’s automatic qualifier in singles, and he will be joined by USF’s Sasha Gozun, UCF’s Korey Lovett and Tulsa’s Or Ram-Harel, while SMU’s Ronald Slobodchikov is an alternate. In doubles, SMU’s tandem of Yates Johnson/Hunter Johnson will be The American’s representative.
