PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending May 15.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Corey Julks • Jr. • UTL • Houston
Julks hit .467 (7-for-15) to lead Houston to a series win over Tulane and keep the Cougars tied for first place in the conference. In the first game against the Green Wave, Julks went 3-for-5 including a three-run home run and a grand slam in the ninth inning. His seven RBIs in the final frame are the most by one player in an inning in conference history. Julks also stole home in the second game of the series and finished with three stolen bases, six runs scored and eight RBIs over the week.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Peter Strzelecki • Rs-Jr. • RHP • USF
Strzelecki led USF to a Game 3 2-0 win over UConn to keep the Bulls tied atop the standings entering the final week of play by throwing a complete game shutout against the Huskies. Strzelecki struck out eight batters on 109 pitches, while only allowing two hits and a walk.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
R.J. Thompson • Sr. • OF • Cincinnati
Thompson hit .444 (8-for-18) with six RBIs as Cincinnati went 3-2 over the last week. Thompson had two three-hit games on the week and against Western Carolina went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a double a home run and two walks.
Tim Cate • So. • LHP • UConn
Cate tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts in the first game of UConn’s series with USF. Cate did not factor in to the decision in UConn’s 2-1 extra-inning win but the sophomore went seven innings, allowing only one run on six hits.
Spencer Brickhouse • Sr. • 1B/DH • East Carolina
Brickhouse led the Pirates, hitting .500 (7-for-14) and scoring six runs over the week. In the first game against Memphis, Brickhouse hit two home runs and scored three times. He finished the week with a hit and a run scored in every game.
Trey Cumbie • So. • LHP • Houston
Cumbie threw a complete game shutout to lead Houston to a 4-0 win at Tulane and clinch the series for the Cougars. Cumbie struck out a career-high 11 batters and only allowed five hits in his second-straight complete game.
Chris Carrier • Sr. • OF • Memphis
Carrier hit .400 (6-for-15) as Memphis went 2-2 last week. CarrIer had a hit in every game and finished with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.
