PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending May 20.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lex Kaplan • Sr. • OF • Tulane
Kaplan helped the Green Wave to a 3-1 week, hitting .500 (9-for-18) finishing with three hits in each game against Memphis over the weekend. Kaplan drove in three runs, scored six and finished with four doubles and two home runs. In the series finale against Memphis, Kaplan went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs scored.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Tim Cate • So. • LHP • UConn
Cate threw his first-career complete game shutout in a 6-0 win over East Carolina. Cate only gave up five singles while striking out eight batters over the 109-pitch outing to secure to series-opening win.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Kyle Marsh • Rs-So. • INF • UCF
Marsh helped UCF to a series win over USF, giving the Knights the top seed in the American Baseball Championship. Marsh went 7-for-14 over the week (.500), including two doubles, and four RBIs and four runs scored against the Bulls.
R.J. Thompson • Sr. • OF • Cincinnati
Thompson led the Bearcats last week hitting .529 (9-for-17), notching a hit in all four games, including two games with three hits. Thompson was responsible for 10 runs, driving in five and scoring five.
Kirk Morgan • Sr. • RHP • East Carolina
Morgan went 1-0 in two starts over the week for East Carolina. In the series finale at UConn, Morgan threw eight shutout innings, only allowing two hits while striking out five. Morgan also threw three shutout innings with six strikeouts against Campbell earlier in the week.
Trey Cumbie • So. • LHP • Houston
Cumbie threw his fourth-straight complete game, guiding the Cougars to an 8-3 win over Cincinnati. Cumbie allowed nine hits and one earned run, while striking out four over 99 pitches.
Grayson Padgett • So. • UTL • Houston
Padgett led the Houston offense over the week, hitting .438 (7-for-16) and driving in seven runs. Padgett finished two hits in three different games and in the second game against Cincinnati finished with four RBIs. He also scored seven runs over the week.
