NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men's tennis'
Constantin Schmitz earned one final accolade for his breakout junior season on Thursday, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named him a 2017 Singles All-American.
It marks the first All-America nod in Schmitz's career, becoming just the ninth different student-athlete in Tulane history to do so. In addition, it marks the third straight All-America honor for the Green Wave and 17th overall in program history.
"This is a great honor for a very solid body of work by Constantin this year," Tulane head coach
Mark Booras stated. "We look forward to getting even more from him and the rest of the team next year and taking the program to the next level."
Schmitz qualified for All-America status by being named a top-16 seed at the NCAA Singles Championships. Schmitz finished the year with a 24-7 overall record, a 16-3 mark in dual play and a No. 21 national ranking - reaching as high as No. 16 in the country.
The rising senior was named the American Athletic Conference's Co-Player of the Year and the top player in Louisiana by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Schmitz went 8-3 against ranked opposition this spring, playing in the No. 1 singles position for the first time of his career. The Germany native led the Green Wave to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships where they reached the second round.
Lastly, Schmitz will enter his senior year already sitting with the seventh most singles victories (73) in school history with the possibility of becoming just the fourth ever person to reach the 100-win milestone.
