PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference had three baseball student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The award recognizes student-athletes from across the nation for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
East Carolina’s Travis Watkins and Tulane’s Hunter Williams were both named First Team Academic All-America. East Carolina’s Charlie Yorgen was named Third Team Academic All-America.
Watkins, a graduate student, boasts a 4.0 GPA in his MBA program at East Carolina. On the field, Watkins led the Pirates with 84 hits and 49 RBIs and finished tied for the team lead with 10 home runs. Watkins finished second on the team with a .340 batting average and was named to the American Baseball Championship All-Tournament team.
Yorgen, a senior for the Pirates, holds a 3.72 GPA while majoring in Business Management. The infielder finished the season third on the team with a .339 batting average, led the team in runs scored (49) and finished tied for second in doubles (14) and RBIs (38).
Williams, a senior and the 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, has a 4.0 GPA in Neuroscience at Tulane and led the Green Wave with a .357 batting average, 87 hits and 18 doubles. Williams was second on the team with 11 home runs, 45 runs scored and 41 runs driven in.
