Women's Soccer: Week 1 Honors Announced



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s soccer honors for the week ending Aug. 20.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Evelyne Viens * So. * USF
Viens compiled six points over the course of opening weekend play in a 2-0 week for USF. She scored two goals in a 3-2 overtime win over Charlotte, including the game-winner in double overtime. She also scored the third goal for the Bulls against American and tallied 17 of USF’s shots for the weekend.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Vanessa Gilles * Sr. * Cincinnati
Gilles anchored the defense to a pair of shutouts over the weekend with a 1-0 win over Buffalo Friday night and a 2-0 win over Boston University Sunday afternoon. Gilles also scored her first goal of the year in the win over Boston.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Rachel Ashworth Shepard * RS-Jr. * Memphis
Ashworth Shepard made eight total saves and played all 180 minutes in the two matches the Tigers played over the weekend. She posted her first two career starts and shutouts to open the season.
 
Rookie of the Week
Jazmin Grant * Fr. * Houston
Grant scored back-to-back goals inside the third and 10th minute of Houston’s 4-1 win over Northern Arizona. Grant also tallied an assist in the Cougars 3-0 shutout over Texas Southern.  She totaled five points over the two-game stretch, positioning her as the second-leading scorer in the league.
 
Weekly Honor Roll
Courtney Cash * Jr. * ECU
Had four points over the week, a goal and two assists, in a 2-1 win over Dayton and tallied an assist on each of ECU’s other goals. 
 
Elizabeth Woerner * Jr. * Memphis
Scored two goals in the season-opening win over Samford, the multiple-goal match was the third of her career
 
Sabrina Wagner * Fr. * USF
Scored in the last 40 seconds of the game vs. Charlotte where USF was down 2-1 to get USF to overtime, and eventually win
 
Claire Oates * Sr. * SMU
Scored the game-winning goal against No. 17 Arkansas
 
Julia Dolan * Fr. * Temple
Scored the game-winning goal on a header in her collegiate debut in overtime at Fairleigh Dickinson
