Highlights
- Temple, ECU, and Tulane shined across the conference in opening day action, each of the three coming out on top with sweep victories over their opponents. But perhaps the most impressive victory came in the final American match of the night when UCF took down Northern Colorado on the road in a five-set thriller.
- UCF went the full distance in its season-opener, taking Northern Colorado to five sets and coming out on top with three different Knights combining for two blocks for the last pair of points to push their side ahead 17-15 in the fifth. Three players registered a double-double in the win, including Kristina Fisher, Miranda Watkins, and Erin Olson.
- The Pirates defeated William & Mary in three, as outside hitter Lael Ceriani posted a match-high 15 kills on 30 attempts with just four errors to record a .367 hitting percentage. ECU has 4-1 in season openers under head coach Julie Torbett and picked up their 12th—straight non-conference win.
- Temple came out strong to start, recording a .567 hitting percentage in the opening set en route to a 3-0 sweep over Northeastern. Senior Izzy Rapacz notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, hitting .280 with four blocks. Classmate setter Kyra Coundourides also tallied a double-double, with 33 assists and 10 digs.
- Tulane split the day with Louisiana on the road, losing the first frame, 3-0 before responding in the second match with a 3-0 win to end the night on a high note. Lexie Douglas led the Green Wave’s offense with 21 kills, while Dayna Kern had seven total blocks.
- UConn also split their opening day in New York at the St. John’s Invite. The Huskies dropped their season opener, 3-2, against Sacramento State this afternoon, before bouncing back and cruising to a 3-1 victory against New Hampshire. Kayla Williams led the team with a double-double in both matches, finishing the day with a team-leading 26 kills and 27 digs in total.
- Cincinnati started off 0-2 in its season debut with a 3-0 loss to No. 23 Utah, followed by a 3-1 setback to Arkansas State. Jade Tingelhoff recorded a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs in the first match, while Elly Ogle recorded her first career double-double in the second. Carly Nolan also saw a strong performance against the Red Wolves, as she reached the 20-kill mark for the fifth time in her career.
- Both Katie Hegarty (21 kills, 12 digs) and Lauren Mills (22 kills, 13 digs) had a double-double, but SMU dropped a 3-2 five-set thriller to Mississippi State at home to start off its season. The Mustangs won the first set (25-20) and the fourth (25-21) before falling in a close fifth set, 27-25. Against Rice in the second match of the day, Mills was one kill shy of her second double-double, scoring nine kills with a match-high 20 digs, while SMU suffered a 3-1 loss.
- USF took Northwestern to four sets in the opening match of the season but dropped Friday's USF Invitational contest, 3-1. Senior middle blocker Joli Holland had a match-high five blocks, while classmate Alex Mendoza led the Bulls with 22 assists.
- North Texas defeated Tulsa, 3-1 despite a career-high 19 kills by senior Emily Thorson. Freshman Lindsey Ledyard tallied a match-high 36 assists in her collegiate debut.
- Faith Myers led the way with her 16th career double-double (25 assists, 16 digs) for Memphis, but the Tigers fell to Bradley, 3-1, to open their season.
- Houston rallied from a 2-0 deficit but ultimately fell 3-2 to McNeese in its 2017 season opener on Friday afternoon as part of the UTA Invitational. Houston out-killed McNeese, 70-52 with outside hitter Brianna Lynch leading all and tied her career high with 17 kills. Senior Sarah Afflerbaugh and freshman Gabi Zelaya each recorded double-doubles.
