Volleyball heads into 32 matches Over the weekend

>The American volleyball teams will combine for 32 matches in 10 tournaments this weekend, as the nonconference action continues through week two.

>Coming off three straight sweep victories to start off its season, Wichita State is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll. The Shockers will play three matches at the IUPUI Invitational this weekend, squaring off with IUPUI on Sept. 1 and Marquette and Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 2. Wichita State senior setter Emily Hiebert earned the American Offensive Player of the Week honor in last week’s conference accolades after averaging 10.00 assists and 0.67 aces, 3.11 digs, and 1.56 blocks per set.

>UConn’s Kennedy Arundel was chosen as the opening week’s conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Huskies went 2-1 at the St. John’s Invitational. Arundel led UConn in the back row with 5.42 digs per set, including a 29-dig effort against Sacramento State. The Huskies dropped its season opener to the Hornets in a five-set thriller but battled back to win two straight, including a 3-0 victory over St. John’s. UConn will stay home this weekend, hosting its Dog Pound Challenge in Storrs, Conn., where it will welcome Iona and LSU on Sept. 1 and Hartford on Sept. 2.

>ECU started off strong, sweeping its first two opponents while hosting a tournament to begin the season. Lael Ceriani leads the conference with 4.40 kills and 4.85 points per set, as the Pirates went 2-1 last weekend. She reached double-digits in kills, while hitting over .300 in all three matches. ECU will travel to Stetson this weekend to face Providence, Stetson, and Bucknell in that order.

>After its schedule changed due to Hurricane Harvey, Tulane played two doubleheaders last weekend against Louisiana and South Alabama. The Green Wave lost the first match against the Ragin’ Cajuns, but battled back to win three straight en route to a 3-1 record. Justine Bowers joins Hiebert in ranking first in the conference with 0.67 aces per set. Tulane is back in action this weekend, taking on Grambling State, Mississippi State, and Stephen F. Austin.
