>Three American teams share the top spot in the volleyball standings with a 2-0 conference record, as week two of league action continues with all 12 teams competing on Friday, September 29 and Sunday, October 1.
>Wichita State
25 won its first two conference matches, opening its inaugural American season with a 3-1 win over Temple and a sweep over UConn on the road. The Shockers lead the conference in hitting percentage, assists and kills per set (13.89), capturing a weekly league honor in four out of five weeks into the season. Wichita State is 4-1 at home this year and will host USF, then UCF over the weekend.
>SMU is 8-2 in American openers after joining the Shockers in going 2-0 last weekend. The Mustangs rank 18th in the nation with a league-high 17.48 digs per set this year. Recently named The American Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, Lauren Mills leads SMU with nine double-doubles and 4.39 points per set. SMU will hit the road to take on ECU and Cincinnati over the weekend.
>The Bearcats bounced back from a tough nonconference slate and now own a 2-0 conference record to start off league play. Carly Nolan has been a force at the net for Cincinnati and has the conference lead of 4.10 kills and 4.56 points per set with seven double-doubles this year. The Bearcats return home for the first time this year, and will open their home campaign with a match against Tulsa before hosting SMU.
>The American has seen strong performances from behind the service line with Houston ranking ninth in the nation with 1.77 aces per set and UConn’s Kayla Williams ranking seventh in the nation with 0.53 aces per set. Williams had a league-high seven service aces in a four set win over Memphis on Sept. 22. Two of the top-10 league servers in Katie Karbo (0.36 aces per set) and Sarah Afflerbaugh (0.35 aces per set) play for Houston. With 87 service aces this season, Tulane ranks 38th nationally.
