PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced its first round of cross country weekly honors in 2017 through the week ending Sept. 3.
Male Athlete of the Week
Joe Harter * Sr. * Wichita State
Harter won the Shockers’ season opener at home, placing first in the 69th Annual J.K. Gold Classic with a time of 18:21.3. He guided his team to a first place finish through the rolling hills of the 6k RAFT Golf Course, as Wichita State defeated Kansas State, 15-46, as well as Missouri, 23-33, in dual competition. Harter became the fifth Shocker in as many years to capture first place in the J.K. Gold Classic.
Female Athlete of the Week
Arnica Zitting * Sr. * Memphis
Zitting led the way at the Brooks Twilight Classic and clocked a time of 18:01.43 for a first-place finish, as the Tigers finished fifth in the race. She became the first runner in Memphis program history to win the annual season opening race in its 15 years of existence. She improved from a previous career-best ninth-place finish at the Brooks Twilight Classic in which she ran her freshman year.
