Highlights
- The school records, NCAA qualifiers and personal records continued across the American Athletic Conference with seven men’s teams and 10 women’s teams in action over the weekend.
- Houston’s men’s and women’s teams competed in two. The Cougars finished with six victories at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational on Friday and sent a handful of athletes to compete at the Texas Tech Corky Classic on Saturday, where the men’s 4x400-meter relay squad broke the school record to wrap competition. Amere Lattin took the baton first, running a 47.43 opening leg, before Mario Burke’s 46.71 on the second leg. Quivell Jordan carried the third leg at a pace of 47.26, before Kahmari Montgomery brought it home in 45.18 to post a 3:06.57. The Cougars tabbed a strong showing in each of the men’s and women’s 60-meter dashes, beginning with a world-leading performance from Elijah Hall in the men’s race. After setting the top times in each of the preliminary and semifinal rounds, Hall posted a personal best 6.60 to win the event and post the top time in the world through the early season.
On the women’s side, the Cougars finished with four competitors inside the final eight, including a second-place finish from sophomore Brianne Bethel in 7.42. Bethel’s personal-best time ranks tied for first in The American this season and tied for 14th in the NCAA. In in the hurdles, freshman Naomi Taylor crossed the line in 8.36 in the women’s edition of the event. Taylor’s mark placed her sixth overall, and tied her for 12th in the NCAA through the early season.
- A handful of UConn runners turned in career bests at the Nittany Lion Invitationalto open its 2018 season. Freshman Mia Nahom turned in an 11th place finish in the 1000m with a time of 3:06.39, while Allie Alsup followed with a time of 2:56.77. Nicole Faucette's time of 3:06.39 was also a personal best in the 1000m as she turned in a 26th place finish. Brianna O'Brien carried her success from the cross country season onto the track, as the freshman finished sixth overall in the 3k with a personal best time of 10:50.11. Haley Hasty (10:09.45) rounded out the top-15 finishers placing 11th while Mackenzie Pias turned in a career best time of 10:50.11 in the race. In the shot put, sophomore Divine Oladipo took home the silver medal with a throw of 16.03m. Additionally, Amaris Blount also turned in a second place performance in the weight throw recording a distance of 19.11m.
- The UConn men’s track and field team competed at the Great Dane Classic on Saturday, earning multiple runner-up finishes and captured a few personal-bests. Ian Bergere claimed second place in the pole vault after having a jump off at 16’ against Robert O’Biren of Columba. Freshman Todd Steuber grabbed a runner-up finish in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 16.08 M.enior captain Michael O’Donnell (8:12.97) captured a runner-up finish in the 3000M Dash with a late burst to the finish line.
- The UCF track and field team collected 10 top 10 finishes as the Knights opened the indoor season at the Blazer Invite on Friday. With her fourth throw of the day, Gabby Durant set a new personal record. Shanell Atkins made her UCF debut with a top 10 finish in the shot put, landing at 13.25m/43-5.75. best in the weight throw. The Plant City, Fla., native finished third overall with a distance of 19.11m/62-8.5.
- Cincinnati had a strong outing in its final day of competition at the 2018 Kentucky Invitational Saturday, as the Bearcats recorded 22 personal-best marks with 11 finding their way onto the program's all-time Top 10 lists. Annette Echikunwoke continued to post victories in the weight throw as she won the meet with a best of 21.59m (70-10.00). Tiona Lattimore recorded three Top 10 times in her three races while Loretta Blaut won the high jump for UC's only win of the day to lead the charge for the team in their second meet of the collegiate season. Blaut was the lone victor on the day for the Bearcats as she won the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.76m (5-09.25). For the men, Michael Vitucci, who ran 1:52.56 on the day, ranks No. 27 in the 800m while Valles is up to No. 4 in the pole vault.
- Led by Junior thrower Daniella Murchison's first place finish in shot put and second place finish in the weight throw, the SMU track and field team opened the indoor season on Friday at the Arkansas Invitational. She went on to record a 15.14m toss in the weight throw to finish second. Freshmen Cassie Ackemann and Atipa Mabonga stood out in their field events. Ackemann cleared 1.70m in the high jump to place second, while Mabonga's 12.42m mark in triple jump also earned her a second place finish. On the track, junior Madison Pyle and freshman Ashton Woods each set indoor personal records in the 600m run. Pyle finished fourth with a time of 1:34.28, followed by Woods in ninth with a time of 1:40.94.
- Tulsa’s Ben Preisner, Ellis Coon and Mark Middleton sweep the top-three places in the mile run at the Arkansas Invite on Friday. Aleks Rapp brought home first place in the weight throw. Preisner secured first place in the mile run with a time of 4:11.19. Rapp notched his second first-place finish of the season in the weight throw, as he hurled a toss of 20.14 meters. Allison Bailey placed the highest of any Golden Hurricane women, with a third-place finish. Bailey recorded a time of 2:10.72 in the 800-meters.
- ECU took on a solid field at its season-opening competition, winning five events at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup inside the Eddie Smith Field House. Junior distance runner Stefano Migliorati picked up a pair of event titles in the 800-meter run and the mile run while senior Galissia Cause captured the shot put crown and junior Hakeem Horton won the long jump. Additionally, senior Ryan Davis topped the field in the shot put while placing second in the weight throw.
- USF opened the 2018 indoor season with two event victories and eight top-three finishes at the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday. Chelsea Francis won the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.62 seconds, which moved the junior into sixth place in the program's all-time indoor record book. Kaytlyn Gill won the long jump with a mark of 18-9.25, which ranks 10th in USF indoor history. For the men, David Bell placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 17-2.75, which now ranks second all-time at USF.
- On Saturday, 19 student-athletes represented Temple track and field at the 12th Great Dane Classic hosted by University at Albany. Dual sport athlete freshman Aisha Brown made her high jump debut while Temple's 4x800m relay team snagged a second place finish.
- The Shockers competed in the Shocker Prelude, as well as the KSU-KU-WSU Triangular over the weekend. Wichita State's men's track and field team won five events, including multiple top three finishes, to win the Shocker Prelude with 139 points. The women's program had a strong showing in the shot put, pole vault and 600m to finish fourth with 82 points. Wichita State then competed with 26 men and 26 women Saturday against in-state rivals Kansas State and Kansas in the annual Triangular. The Shocker men finished second and the women came in third. The Shocker men won two events, as Jake Horsch ran a personal best in the 600yd to finish first and Austin Corley won the 400m in a personal best 49.48. On the women's side, the Shockers were well represented in the weight throw and shot put. Meagan Williams finished third (16.01m/52-6.50) and Kelsey Slawson placed fifth with a mark of 15.59m/51-1.75 weight throw, which is 10th best in Shocker history.
