Highlights

Bowling Green 2, Cincinnati 0
University of Cincinnati men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Bowling Green on Tuesday night at Gettler Stadium in its final nonconference match of the season.

With the defeat, UC fell to 3-12-1 on the season, while BGSU improved to 5-5-4 in 2018. The loss also snapped the Bearcats' six-match win streak against the Falcons.

The Bearcats were aggressive offensively to begin the second half, but just weren't able to deposit a score. The Falcons broke the tie in the 53rd minute on a goal by Tate Robertson. Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Red & Black pushed ahead searching for the equalizer with Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) initiating a couple opportunities 15 minutes into the period. BGSU responded by adding an insurance goal in the 63rd minute on a score by Achille Robin. In a 2-0 hole late, UC struggled to maintain possession as the visitors protected their lead. Ultimately, the two second-half scores were too much for the home team to overcome as it came up short, 2-0.

Smythe led the way for the Bearcats offense with three shots on the night, including a pair on target. Melink chipped in two shots, both on goal. Lawrence ended the night with three saves. As a team, UC attempted eight shots and two corner kicks.

Penn 0, Temple 0
The Temple men's soccer squad (4-8-4, 1-3-1 AAC) and the Penn Quakers (2-4-6, 0-3-1 IVY) battled to a scoreless draw on a chilly Tuesday night at the Temple Sports Complex. After 110 minutes, neither team could find the back of the net despite multiple scoring opportunities.

Defensive efforts by the back line of Tyler Gainer, Pierre Cayet, Jamie Pick and Zach Brown along with six saves by Simon Lefebvre earned the Owls their fourth blank sheet of the season.

The extra time needed to decide tonight's match marks the seventh overtime game the Owls have played this season.

After 110 minutes Penn took the edge in corner kicks (4-3), shots (16-14) and saves (9-6), but Temple put nine shots on target compared to their six. Lefebvre notched his third shutout of the year, and has now saved 51 total shots this season.

UConn 3, Vermont 2
Wrapping up the non-conference portion of its schedule, the Huskies, behind two second-half goals, staved off Vermont's upset bid, 3-2, to remain undefeated at Morrone Stadium. UConn moves to 10-2-2 on the season.

A 2-1 Vermont lead didn’t last into the second half. Just like they've done in several games this year, the battle-tested Huskies powered through the adversity and showed their resiliency once again, finding the equalizer in the 64th minute. Dayonn Harris sent a cross to the left side of the field that was initially deflected by Vermont's keeper Aron Runarsson, but the ball ricocheted off the keeper's fingertips right over to Abdou Mbacke Thiam – who perfectly timed his jump and put the ball in the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2.

Vermont launched some late attacks and again were knocking on the door, but Austin Aviza denied entry, making two huge stops – a diving save and a deflection – to keep the game tied heading into the last 10 minutes. It looked as if the game was headed into overtime, but a stroke of déjà vu occurred in the final minute of regulation.

With the game-clock winding down and the Huskies on the attack, Abdou Mbacke Thiam launched another high-arching shot – similar to the one Saturday night against Temple – in an attempt to win the game. Mbacke Thiam's shot hit the crossbar, but the ball bounced out to Dayonn Harris, who capitalized on the rebound and fired the ball into the back of the net to give No. 8 UConn a 3-2 win.

FIU 3, USF 2
Despite leading in the second half, the USF men's soccer team fell 3-2 to FIU in double overtime in the midweek heartbreaker.

It was a night of firsts for the Bulls as Gordon Phipps and Diego Guerrero scored their first career goals on the night. The Bulls found themselves down a goal in the 14thminute when FIU's Jacques Bouvery slotted in a goal from teammate Inigo Sagarduy. In a prime opportunity to step up, freshman Gordon Phipps who hails from southeast Florida, slotted in a perfectly placed free kick from Alex Zis for his first career goal.

The equalizer carried the Bulls until the second half when Guerrero solo maneuvered around four defenders and placed a goal to give the Bulls a lead in the 74th minute. Unfortunately for USF, just five minutes later, Errol Spence answered with the second equalizing goal of the night and USF and FIU were tied 2-2.

In the 82nd minute, red cards were issued to USF's Henrique Gallina and FIU's Kimani Simons, leaving both teams to play with 10 men apiece for the rest of the match. USF got off eight shots in the second half, but could not find the back of the net in overtime before FIU's Joris Ahlinvi scored in the 107th minute to seal the 3-2 match.

Tulsa 5, Oral Roberts 1
The Tulsa men's soccer team dominated crosstown rival Oral Roberts, 5-1, on Tuesday night at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.  The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-8-2 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fell to 6-5-3 overall.

ORU struck first as Tanguy Guerineau drilled in a penalty kick at the 22:15 mark, but just under seven minutes later Alex Harris evened the score, 1-1.  Harris' goal, the first of his career, came at the 29:11 mark off a cross from Chase Bromstedt.  The two teams were knotted up at the break.

In the second half, TU scored four goals in less than 18 minutes.  Joe Ruiz netted two quick scores, coming in the 69th and 73rd minutes.  The first came on a combination from Gilles Kuhler to Thomas Wells and was shot from 15 yards out up the middle, while his second goal was off a pass from Bromstedt from six yards out.

Harris Partain picked up his second goal on the year at the 75:42 mark as he drilled in a goal from 18 yards out from right to left, and then Juan Sanchez added the final score as he capitalized on a penalty kick in the 86th minute.

Tulsa had a 14-10 lead in shots, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Memphis 2, Lipscomb 0
The Memphis men's soccer team finished its final non-conference match with a 2-0 shutout over Lipscomb Tuesday evening.

Alexandros Ierides had himself a night, contributing on both goals for the Tigers and giving them solid momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Half number two started with four corner kicks in the first five minutes from Memphis. Though they amounted to nothing, they were a telling sign of the aggression the Tigers were going to display in the second half.

The scoring finally opened up on the fifth corner kick of the half for Memphis. In the 64th minute, Ierides launched a corner kick into the box, and Roberts was able to finish it off, heading it past the keeper. The finish was Roberts' first of the season, and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

After exchanging possession, Memphis took control in their defensive third. Playing the ball up, Ierides found himself room to dribble up the field. Taking his space, he eventually got himself into shooting range, and finished past Lipscomb's keeper into the lower right corner, finding his second goal of the season in the 71st minute.
