PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 28.
Offensive Player of the Week
Lukas Fernandes * Jr. * M * Temple
Fernandes buried his sixth goal of the season in the 27
th minute on Saturday, giving Temple enough offense for a 1-0 win over Tulsa. The victory sealed a berth to the American Athletic Conference Championship for the Owls and capped a 1-0-1 week for Temple. Fernandes leads the Owls’ scoring attack this season with six goals and four assists for 16 points and is now a two-time Offensive Player of the Week selection.
Defensive Player of the Week
Philip Ponder * Jr. * D * SMU
Ponder netted the insurance goal for SMU in the 63
rd minute against UConn on Sunday, as the Mustangs jumped into a tie for first place in the standings with a 2-0 win. The goal marked the first of the season for Ponder, who anchored the SMU backline to the shutout. With the win, the Mustangs snapped UConn’s 10-game unbeaten streak and handed the Huskies their first loss at home this season.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Simon Lefebvre * Jr. * Temple
Lefebvre picked up a pair of shutouts last week as Temple battled to a scoreless draw with Penn and defeated Tulsa 1-0. The junior turned aside six shots against Penn on Tuesday, including one in the second overtime period, and added four to his weekly total against Tulsa on Saturday. On the season, Lefebvre owns a 1.09 goals against average and .764 save percentage.
Rookie of the Week
Thomas Haney * Fr. * D * SMU
Haney’s first career goal came at the most crucial of times for SMU, as he put the Mustangs on the board first against UConn on Saturday. The freshman converted a header off the assist from Knut Ahlander in the 49
th minute for what would be the game winner. SMU snapped UConn’s 10-game unbeaten streak and jumped into a tie for first place in the conference standings.
