PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Nine of 10 American Athletic Conference schools own a league victory through the first two weeks of conference play as The American continues to be one of the most competitive in the country.
The No. RV/25 USF Bulls, which are one of two ranked American teams, won its season opener but saw its five-game, win streak snapped at Temple’s as freshman Gabriela Johnson, this week’s American Rookie of the Week, scored in the 105th minute to give the Owls their first victory over a nationally-ranked team in program history. Temple is one of three teams tied for third with six points.
SMU moved to the top of the standings with nine points thanks to a road win at Cincinnati, but it was Houston which made a big impression in week two as the Cougars won at ECU and drew at Cincinnati to move into second place with seven points.
UCF was the lone two-match winners last week, taking both of their league-opening games on the road and now ride a three-match win streak and a 5-1-1 record in the month of September.
Memphis is now ranked in both national polls, 18/25, after its bye week and returns to action at Houston and SMU this week.
The league will have its second American Digital Network broadcast of the year on Thursday night. Cincinnati travels to USF with both teams seeking momentum into the final three weeks of the season.
USF has the No. 1 offense in the country and the nation’s leading scorer in Evelyne Viens but must rebound from its first conference loss and just second defeat of the year.
Cincinnati, no stranger to the best in the land, faces its fifth nationally-ranked team this season and aims for its second conference win this season.
