- UCF and Cincinnati stayed perfect in conference play with 4-0 league records, as away teams went 4-2 on to start off Week 3 of American action on Friday night. ECU, SMU and Tulane joined the Knights and Bearcats in starting off the weekend with a win. Conference play resumes on Sunday afternoon with four matches.
Tulane 3, Memphis 1
Both teams entered the court searching for their first conference win of the year, as Tulane defeated Memphis in four sets on the road to capture an American win. Dayna Kern hit .435 with 12 kills to guide the Green Wave’s offense to victory. Kayla Dinkins was a force at the net, recording eight blocks in the win.
UCF 3, Tulsa 1
It was a battle between two undefeated conference teams, as UCF remained perfect in American play with a 3-1 win over Tulsa at the Venue. The Knights hold a 7-0 mark at home this season. Freshman outside hitter McKenna Melville had another strong performance, recording her conference-leading 10th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 19 digs. UCF welcomes Wichita State to the Venue on Sunday, as Tulsa will head to USF.
Wichita State 3, USF 1
Wichita State improved to 3-1 in American Athletic Conference play and 23-1 overall since joining the league in 2017 with a 3-1 win at USF. Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 19 kills and three service aces, while Alex Koon had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Jac’cara Walker led USF with double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs. Wichita State takes on UCF on Sunday, while USF hosts Tulsa inside the Corral.
Cincinnati 3, Temple 0
Three Bearcats recorded a double-double, as Cincinnati won its 12th-straight sets in their fourth-consecutive American sweep over Temple to remain undefeated in conference play. The nation’s leader in kills and points, outside hitter Jordan Thompson, led Cincinnati with a double-double of 18 kills and 16 digs. The Bearcats put their perfect conference slate on the line when they travel to UConn on Sunday afternoon. Temple will host ECU.
ECU 3, UConn 1
Strong defense helped pace ECU past UConn at Gampel Pavilion. The Pirates recorded a season-high 14 blocks, while five players reached double-digit digs in the back row, as ECU collected its fourth-straight four-set win. S’mara Riley registered a double-double of 11 kills and 10 blocks, while Toya Osuegbu led the offense with 12 kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Shelby Martin came close to reaching the conference’s first triple-double this season, recording 34 assists, 10 digs and eight blocks. UConn had a strong offensive showing with four players reaching double-figure kills. The Pirates remain on the road Sunday when they face Temple. UConn will host undefeated Cincinnati.
SMU 3, Houston 0
SMU bounced back from a 0-2 weekend with a sweep over its travel partner Houston. Lexi Nordmann recorded eight kills on 10 swings without an error for a .800 hitting percentage, as the Mustangs earned the straight-sets win. Nordmann added six blocks to fuel the team’s 12 stuffs at the net in the victory. SMU setter Kendall Patterson chipped in with a double-double of 21 assists and 11 digs.
