PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 23.
Player of the Week
Katie Lou Samuelson * Sr. * G/F * UConn
Samuelson earned her second conference Player of the Week nod upon posting back-to-back performances of 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Huskies’ 2-0 week. In UConn’s comeback win against Oklahoma, she added four steals to her double-double as the Huskies held the Sooners to just one point in the final five and half minutes. Against No. 14 California, Samuelson shot 9-of-14 from the field to reach her 20-point total and chipped in a pair of assists. The victory was UConn’s third win over a ranked opponent on the season.
Freshman of the Week
Christyn Williams * Fr. * G * UConn
Williams averaged 13.5 points, five rebounds and two assists in UConn’s two wins last week. Against Oklahoma, she totaled 14 points on 6-of-14 from the field while snagging six boards. She followed with a 5-of-8 shooting performance against No. 14 California for 13 points to go along with four rebounds.
Weekly Honor Roll
Kay Kay Wright * Jr. * G * UCF
Extended her double-digit scoring streak to all 12 of UCF’s games, including a 27-point performance against Pacific that included a conference single-game record 16 made free throws; for UCF’s 2-1 week, averaged 18.3 points, four rebounds and 2.3 assists per game
IImar’I Thomas * So. * F * Cincinnati
Dropped a career-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting to go along with 17 rebounds, adding career-highs with six assists and three steals in Cincinnati’s win over Howard
Alana Davis * So. * F * Memphis
Averaged 19.5 points and nine rebounds for Memphis on the week, posting career-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds in the Tigers’ win over Southeast Missouri; for the week, shot 65 percent (15-of-23) from the field
Enna Pehadzic * So. * G * USF
Had a breakout week for USF, averaging 15 points and 8.7 boards in the Bulls’ three games; registered career-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds in USF’s comeback effort against Creighton and was named to the Florida Sunshine Classic All-Tournament Team
Alicia Froling * R-Sr. * F * SMU
Became just the fourth player in American Athletic Conference history to surpass the 1,000 career rebound mark and the first-ever SMU player to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds; averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds in two games
