Highlights
- The Cincinnati and UConn swimming and diving teams had a busy end to the first half of their 2018-19 seasons, competing in a combined four meets from Nov. 29-Dec. 1. SMU will close-out the fall semester for The American’s swimming and diving programs, competing in the Elite Pro-Am in Lewisville, Texas, for the final meet of the 2018 portion of the season on December 13.
- In all at the Miami Invitational, the Bearcats had 35 personal best times, 10 top-ten program performances and one school record. Cincinnati’s women placed second with 1000.5 points behind Miami's 1249.5 points. The men also trailed Miami for a second-place finish (1271-992). Connor Blatt posted a Bearcats’ record with a 1:46.21 first-place finish in the 200 backstroke. Alex Fortman also won the 100 freestyle for the men. Victoria Hunt earned a win in the 100 breaststroke, while Hans Kabelka won the 200 freestyle. The men ended the day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, thanks to Alberto Garcia, Justin Crew, Remington Oland and Fortman. The Bearcats swept the 800-meter relay events.
Lina Kutsko (100 butterfly) and Din Selmanovic (200 freestyle) each had top-five finishes in the finals of their respective US Winter Nationals events.
- Both the UConn men’s and women’s teams put forth tremendous performances, each picking up three wins to conclude their fall semester slates, defeating Boston College, Boston University and Williams from Nov. 30-Dec. 1. After an impressive dual meet win on Friday night against Boston College (160.5-114.5), the Husky men outscored Boston University, 156-82, while beating Williams, 174.0-60. The UConn women defeated the Eagles, 170-119, and also prevailed through a quick turnaround with a 161-77 win over Williams and a 147-93 victory against the Terriers.
Many Huskies posted impressive Friday night performances with Markus Hunter (100 & 200 breaststroke), Will Kearsey (100 backstroke & 50 freestyle) and Karl Bishop (500 and 1000 freestyle) each posting multiple first-place finishes for the men. Katelyn Walsh (100 & 200 breaststroke), Ryan Dulaney (500 & 1000 freestye), Georgia Apostolu (100 & 200 backstroke) and Jackie Van Lew (100 & 200 freestyle) were also each multi-event winners for the women.
UConn put together a great performance on the boards with the Huskies taking the top four places in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Senior captain Monica Marcello won the 3 meter while Elizabeth Drab took the 1 meter. On the boards for the men, the Huskies swept both the 1 meter and 3 meter as well. Kyle Kennedy took first place in both events.
David May (200 IM), Joey Homan (100 backstroke), Tommy Schurer (100 breaststroke), Cooper Knapp (100 butterfly) and Will Kearsey (50 freestyle) each clinched first-place finishes for the men the following day against Boston University and Williams. Diver Torrington Wagner also swept the diving events with a pair of victories. UConn secured wins in both relays, as well, with Kearsey, May, Markus Hunter and Kyle Dunlap taking first place in the 200 medley relay (1:31.79) that set a new pool record. Kearsey, May, Dunlap and Emils Jurcik closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:03.56.
For the women, Dulaney and Marcello led the way for the Huskies with a pair of wins on Saturday. The long distance swimmer, Dulaney, delivered with wins in the 500 and 1000 freestyles for the second-consecutive day. The Naperville, Ill. native won the 1000 by .19 seconds with a time of 10:25.23. Marcello set a pool record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 310.10 and followed it up with a first-place finish in the 3-meter dive with a score of 307.05. Apostolu (100 backstroke), Megan Wenman (200 IM) and Brazil Rule (50 freestyle) added to the UConn individual win total on Saturday with first-place finishes. UConn continued to dominate in the relays sweeping both the 200 medley and 400 freestyles.
