New Orleans 66, Memphis 59
The University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped a close game Tuesday night to New Orleans by a score of 66-59. The Tigers fall to 2-7 on the year.
Paced by Jamirah Shutes' 16 points, a push in the fourth quarter tipped the game in favor of the visiting Privateers.
As the final quarter began, the Privateers extended their lead to almost double figures. But the Tigers would close the gap, going on a 6-0 run to get the score within four, topped off by fast break scores from Alana Davis and Taylor Barnes with 3:56 remaining. Five made free throws down the stretch for New Orleans would put the game out of reach for the Tigers.
In the closing seconds of the game, Alana Davis grabbed an offensive rebound and made a free throw to secure her fourth double-double of the season, ending with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers finished with 46 rebounds compared to 38 by New Orleans.
UConn 98, Saint Louis 42
Napheesa Collier loved playing in front of family and friends for the first time in her college career.
The UConn forward just didn't like being the center of attention during a 98-42 win over Saint Louis on Tuesday night.
Collier had 22 points and 11 rebounds in a game not far from her hometown of O'Fallon, Missouri. Her family purchased around 300 tickets to accommodate fans of the former high school standout at Incarnate Word Academy.
Katie Lou Samuelson scored 20 points and top-ranked UConn rolled to its 123rd successive regular-season win.
Crystal Dangerfield added 18 points, and Christyn Williams had 17. Oliva Nelson-Ododa added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kyla Irwin added 10 rebounds to help the Huskies gain a 56-31 advantage on the boards.
UConn rolled to a 15-2 lead and never looked back. Samuelson propelled the early outburst with a pair of 3-pointers, and Collier had a short jumper. Williams hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in the first quarter to push the lead to 23-8.
Tulane 71, Nicholls 46
In a career full of them, Tulane women's basketball coach Lisa Stockton reached another milestone at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
With a 71-46 victory over Nicholls, Stockton earned her 500th win as Tulane's head coach. Now in her 25th year leading the Green Wave, Stockton has averaged 20 wins per season while in charge Uptown.
After defeating Nicholls (4-4), Tulane (7-1) has now won seven of its first eight games for the first time since 2014-15. The Green Wave are one of just two teams in the American Athletic Conference with at least seven wins at this point in the season (UConn).
Tulane got it done Tuesday night with 3-pointers and staunch defense. The team knocked down nine 3-pointers including four from Sierra Cheatham and three from Kayla Manuirirangi.
On defense, the Green Wave held Nicholls to just 21 percent shooting in the first half and blocked 11 shots, its most since an 11-block performance against Temple on Jan. 26, 2016.
Wyatt led the team with seven rebounds and had a career-high six blocks. Freeman and Cheatham had two blocks apiece, and Mia Heide had one as well.
