Highlights
- The 2019 indoor track and field season got underway Friday for the Cincinnati program as the Bearcats ventured to Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind., for the 2018 Hoosier Open. The meet saw the Bearcats tally 38 personal bests and 19 marks that found a home on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger. Cincinnati also captured wins in a pair of events as returning NCAA runner-up Loretta Blaut won the women's high jump and Sam Meece grabbed gold in the men's weight throw with another big throw. Blaut used first attempt clearances at 1.79m and 1.82m before missing three times at 1.85m. Meece picked up his win with a big improvement as he captured the weight throw with a heave of 19.27m (63-02.75).
- Sophomore Benjamin Grosse won the UConn Multi-Event Challenge by scoring 4920 points during the two-day Heptathlon at Greer Fieldhouse. Grosse closed the competition with the 60M Hurdles, pole vault and 1000M events. The Wayzata, Minn. native place fourth in the hurdles (8.91) and second in the pole vault (3.45M) before finishing in first place in the 1000M (2:48.69).
- The Houston men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2018-19 indoor season at the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational on Saturday in College Station, Texas. The Cougars secured five wins and 14 podium appearances in their first meet of the season. Houston opened strong on the track, sweeping each of the men's and women's 60-meter hurdle competitions to open the season. With the hurdles off the track, Houston picked up three more podium finishes on the straight track in the men's and women's 60-meter dash. Junior thrower Mikaila Martin picked up a victory by default in the women's weight throw. The Cougars picked up their final field victory from Felipe Valencia in the men's shot put. The senior began his season with a top mark of 60-2.5 (18.35m) to stand atop the podium.
- Tulsa’s track and field team opened the indoor season at the Crimson and Gold Invitational on Saturday, picking up a first-place finish from redshirt-junior Aleks Rapp in the men's weight throw in the meet. The Golden Hurricane got its first gold of the meet in the first field event of the day, the men's weight throw. Rapp, who already holds the meet record in the event from 2016, launched a 19.29m/63-3.50 toss in his second attempt, giving him his first event title of the season.
- Wichita State’s “Yellow team” scored 159.33 points to win the 12th Annual Intrasquad meet Friday afternoon at the Heskett Center. Yellow team event winners include, Meagan Williams (med ball throw – 15.13m), Grant Downes (heptathlon – 4,802), Alex Adams (weight throw – 17.46m), Cory Martens (weight throw – 19.72m, shot put – 16.53m), Austin Corley (600m – 1:23.60), Denvoir Griffin (60m – 6.88, 150m – 16.89), men's and women's combined 4x300m (2:38.49).
- Temple’s track and field squad wrapped up the 2018 portion of its indoor season on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Seahawk Shootout. The Owls earned 15 top 10 finishes on the day, and the meet was highlighted by multiple individual victories and Kira Von Ehren's first race in a Cherry and White track and field uniform.
