Memphis 9, LIU Brooklyn 1
Memphis improved to 3-0 on the year after a 9-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn (0-3) at the FGCU Kickoff Classic Saturday morning. Memphis scored early and often with the fourth inning posing as the only clean defensive inning for LIU Brooklyn.
A pair of hits by Addison Maxwell and Ashley Threatt put runners on second and third with two outs for Delaney Smith. Smith singled up the middle and drove in Maxwell. Memphis loaded the bases with one out and Maxwell drew a five-pitch walk to bring in Brooke Lee
. Smith reached base for the second-straight time and Regan Hadley drove her in with her second triple of the weekend. A single through the right side by Erin Parker drove in Hadley. A bases loaded single through the left side by Kyler Trosclair Klatt scored the first of two runs in the inning. Maxwell drove in the other run with a bases loaded groundout.
Tyler Johnson reached base to leadoff the inning by way of an error by the shortstop. A pinch-hit single by Alexis Castleman set up Kendall Lee for a pinch-hit triple for her first collegiate hit. Brooke Lee singled to right field to bring in Kendall Lee.
As a whole, the Tigers registered 14 hits in the win, a season-high. Four players finished with two hits each including
Brooke Lee, who scored a team-high two runs, while Delaney Smith registered two hits and two stolen bases for the Tigers.
UConn 7, Jacksonville State 4; UConn 7, Jacksonville 0
UConn (2-2) pulled a complete-180 on Saturday, on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Jacksonville State and Jacksonville in the River City Leadoff at the Pruitt Softball Complex. Sophomores Ashlee Dahman and Devon Casazza recorded multi-hit games for the Huskies, as UConn used a combination of timely hitting and pitching to push its way past Jacksonville State in the first game on Saturday, 7-4. The pitching trio of senior Chelsea Eckert, sophomore Katie Koshes and freshman Marybeth Olson tallied nine strikeouts in the game, allowing four unearned runs and just three hits as a staff. Despite leaving 14 runners on base, UConn capitalized on enough opportunities to stay ahead of JSU - with Dahman's two-RBI double in the sixth inning providing some insurance for a previous 5-4 lead. Koshes (1-0) picked up the win and Olson got the save (1).
McDaniel went 3-for-3 at the dish, including a two-out double that drove in two runs to lead UConn's offense in a 7-0 win over Jacksonville in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Redshirt freshman Olivia Sappington contributed two RBI of her own, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stockley (1-1) didn't need much help on Saturday, as she pitched a complete-game shutout - allowing just two hits and striking out four. UConn tallied 10 hits in the game, an early season-high, with seven different players accounting for at least one. Leading 3-0 heading into the seventh, it was a four-run effort in the final frame that put the game away for the Huskies.
Houston 5, Boston College 4; Houston 8, Texas Tech 2
Houston capitalized on a dropped fly to score the game-winning run in a 5-4 victory over Boston College. With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-3. Outfielders Kaylin Crumpton and Maya Thomas each turned in multi-hit performances with 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 showings, respectively. In the bottom of the seventh, Lindsey Stewart doubled and advanced to third on a groundout, before a dropped fly on what would've forced extra innings allowed Houston to walk it off, 5-4.
Houston Softball team used two big innings to down Texas Tech, 8-2, on Saturday night at Aggie Softball Complex as part of the Aggie Classic. With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Red Raiders fall to 1-3. Trystan Melancon (1-1) picked up her first win of the season. The native of Tomball, Texas, limited Texas Tech to two runs on six hits while walking one and tying her career-high with eight strikeouts. After Texas Tech plated two runs to open the game, Houston jumped into the trenches and responded with a five-run bottom frame. The Cougars added three insurance runs in the fourth. With two outs, Garcia hit a two-RBI triple down the right-field line, before later scoring on a wild pitch.
UCF 4, Providence 2; UCF 3, Illinois 2
UCF grabbed a pair of victories over Providence and Illinois at the Friends of Jaclyn Invitational. The Knights (3-1) started the day holding off the Friars for a 4-2 win, then capping off the day with a comeback, extra-inning triumph over the Fighting Illini, 3-2. UCF and Providence remained in a stalemate through the first two innings until the Knights plated two runs in the third. the Knights added two runs due to well-placed bunts and aggressive baserunning. Greenwell crossed first on a wild pitch, while freshman Kendyl Lange tapped home on fellow classmate Kaitlyn Jensen's bunt single.
In the nightcap against Illinois, UCF recordedjust one hit in the first six innings and fell behind 2-0. With one out in the seventh inning, Jensen pinch hit for the Knights and produced in great measure, blasting a double down the left field line and scoring Courtney Rotton. Two batters later with Lange pinch running, it was Aubrey Johnson who sliced a single over UI's second baseman's head, scoring Lange and tying the game, 2-2. In extra innings, Brewer ripped a shot to left field,and Shappacher was able to score for the comeback victory.
USF 3, Michigan 2; USF 6, UAB 3
USF stunned No. 18 Michigan, 3-2, Saturday afternoon the Bulls to upset Michigan for the second straight season. The Bulls used early-inning runs and held the Wolverines scoreless through three innings to earn the win. Junior Samantha Worrell connected on RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to give USF the lead and never trailed. In the second inning, Boyle would hit a two-run homer over the left field fence, her first this season. Georgina Corrik earned her first career win in her second start, and McGill claimed the save after stifling an attempt by Michigan, leaving the possible tying runner stranded to end the game.
The Bulls staged a 6-3 comeback victory over UAB to deliver head coach Ken Eriksen's 900th career win. The Blazers jumped ahead early with a leadoff double followed by a single and a walk to load the bases, but ended the first inning with one run and two stranded. USF went three scoreless frames before a pair of singles from Macy Cook and Mia Fung put runners on first and second. Sophomore Brooke Hartman hit a two-RBI double to give USF the lead for the first time. UAB regained the lead in the top of the fifth, but the Bulls responded with four in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.
