Cincinnati, Houston, USF & SMU take home weekly honors


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly indoor track and field honors for the week ending February 11.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Elijah Hall * Sr. * Houston * Katy, Texas
Hall picks up back-to-back weekly honors for the second time this season, earning his fourth Athlete of the Week accolade. The senior sprinter continued his phenomenal year at the Tyson Invitational, winning three more events and setting a school record. On Friday, Hall placed first in the 60-meter dash with the third-fastest time in the nation (6.58). On Saturday, he won the 200-meter dash, clocking a time just one-hundredth of a second off his school record mark (20.52). He concluded the weekend running the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay squad that broke Houston’s record at 3:04.18—a mark that ranks No. 4 in the NCAA this season.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Latessa Johnson * Jr. * SMU * Dallas, Texas
Johnson is the third SMU track runner to earn a weekly conference honor this season. She broke the school’s 200-meter dash record at the Tyson Invitational to earn the top time in The American at 23.29, shaving 0.19 seconds off her previous record set in 2016. Johnson is listed at No. 22 in the nation in the 200-meter dash this year.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
David Bell * Jr. * USF * Jacksonville, Fla.  
Bell reached new heights for the Bulls in the pole vault, winning his first event of the season and setting a school record. The junior cleared a height of 17’5” (5.31 meters) to place first in the event, as his clearance ranks No. 24 in the nation this year.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Brooke Catherine * Jr. * Cincinnati * Normall, Ill.
Catherine set a school record and ranks first in The American in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.26 meters (13’11.75”). She placed third in the meet at the Music City Challenge and bettered her personal record by 1’2.75.” Her clearance is this year’s 16th-best in the nation.
