Highlights
- American Athletic Conference baseball teams went 7-4 on Sunday to conclude opening weekend action. Five teams secured series victories. ECU, Tulane and Wichita State each swept their series to begin the year at 3-0, while Houston and Memphis each won the final game of their respective series to start off 2-1.
- The American teams went 3-1 in extra-inning games. Troy Stefanski gave the Huskies the lead, 9-7, with a chopper back up the middle that found its way into centerfield. Winning on the road, UConn closed opening weekend with a 2-1 record. Four players had a multi-hit game, led by first baseman Chris Winkel who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. P.J. Poulin came in to close for the final 2.2 innings, recording six strikeouts to earn the win.
Shortstop Cooper Coldiron singled through the left side in the 10th inning for the walk-off RBI to give Houston a 3-2 win over Holy Cross and a 2-1 weekend series victory. It was a tight battle, as hits were 9-5 in favor of the Cougars. Coldiron accounted for two Houston hits and finished the day with the team’s only two RBIs of the game.
Cincinnati outfielder Treg Haberkorn brought home two runs in the top of the 10th innings for the Bearcats on the way to a 7-4 win over San Diego in game one of a double header. The Bearcats were tied at 3-3 in the top of the ninth of game two, but San Diego earned the walk-off RBI to claim the 4-3 win. The Bearcats ended their opening weekend with a 2-1 record.
USF plated seven runs in the seventh inning to tie game three at 8-8, bringing it to extra innings, but No. 6 North Carolina scored the game-winner in the 10th inning to move ahead, 9-8, and claim the series, 2-1.
- A strong start propelled ECU to a 9-3 game-three win, as the Pirates completed the weekend sweep over Western Carolina in their first series of the season. ECU recorded five runs in the opening inning, as four players enjoyed a multi-hit game. Third baseman Connor Litton, outfielder Bryant Packard and catcher Jake Washer combined for seven RBIs.
- Designated hitter Matt Rowland hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put Tulane ahead, as the Green Wave defeated Wright State, 11-5 to complete a second consecutive come-from-behind win and capture their opening weekend series sweep. Rowland ended the day with five RBIs, while Grant Witherspoon knocked in three runs and had a double.
- Shortstop Jordan Boyer had three RBIs, including the game-winner in the ninth inning, as Wichita State completed the weekend sweep over McNeese State with an 11-10 win to start off 2018 at 3-0.
- Memphis and Western Kentucky split a Sunday double header at FedExPark and the Tigers finished the weekend with a series win to start the season. After falling 3-1 in game two, the Tigers jumped out to a big lead in the series finale and the pitching staff held the Hilltoppers to just one run on the way to a 7-1 victory.
- The Knights tacked on three runs in the fourth inning and held the lead through the eighth, but Samford used a three-run surge in the top of the ninth to edge UCF, 5-4. The Knights suffer their second straight one-run loss to wrap up the weekend.
- On deck, The American teams prepare for a collective 33 games next week, as the nonconference action continues.
