Highlights
UConn 1, Robert Morris 0; UConn 3, Rider 0
Complete-game shutouts from freshman Marybeth Olson and senior Chelsea Eckert led UConn to a pair of low-scoring victories at the CCU Softball Complex, including 1-0 over Robert Morris and 3-0 against Rider. Olson (2-1) and Eckert (1-0) combined for a dominant 20-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio throughout the day, surrendering just six hits in 14 innings of work. Opponents hit just .122 at the plate against the UConn hurlers.
Sophomore Devon Casazza hit her first home run of the season in the second inning against Robert Morris, a run that proved to be the game-winner. Sophomores Kiwi McDaniel and Ashlee Dahman also contributed RBI on Sunday.
Five different players recorded hits for the Huskies against Rider, including senior Emma Stanley, who personally capped-off a great weekend of hitting with a 1-for-3 game and a run scored. Kiwi McDaniel got the Huskies on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout. The Huskies tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Dahman. A few pitches later, Carli Cutler scored from third base on a wild pitch by Rider, making it 3-0.
ECU 4, Townson 3
ECU defeated Towson 4-3 Sunday to extend its win streak to five games, before falling to UMBC 5-6 to close the tournament. A RBI groundout by senior infielder Karlie Smith afforded the Pirates an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and junior infielder Ashley Weingartz added to the advantage in the bottom of the second with a two-run single. With freshman RHP Whitney Sanford twirling a gem, allowing just one hit through her first five innings of work, redshirt sophomore infielder Tate McCellan made it a 4-0 contest in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI infield single. The Tigers rallied back in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run by Brook Miko to slice their deficit to one. A couple of ECU errors in the top of the seventh plated a run with redshirt junior Ashley Cruise in the circle but, with runners at second and third and one out, Sanford re-entered the contest and induced a flyout and groundout to preserve the one-run victory.
