PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Coming off a 19-8 opening weekend, The American’s baseball teams will return to action this week for 32 nonconference games. The conference’s .704 winning percentage ranks second among the 31 Division I conferences.
ECU, Tulane and Wichita State all swept their three-game series to start 2018, while Cincinnati, No. 22 Houston, Memphis and No. 25 UConn each went 2-1.
The American went 4-3 against ranked opponents in its opening weekend with three of the games going to extra innings. UCF defeated No. 15 Virginia, 6-3, while USF took down No. 6 North Carolina, 4-3 on Friday.
On Sunday, UConn and Cincinnati each defeated a team receiving votes in a national poll in 10 innings on the road. The Huskies outlasted Georgia Tech, 9-7, as the Bearcats won 7-4 against San Diego.
ECU used an explosive offense that averaged 7.3 runs per game to defeat Western Carolina three times at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium from Feb. 16-18. Six players ended the weekend batting better than .300
Wichita State reached double-figure runs and hits in each of its three wins at McNeese State to begin its inaugural American Athletic Conference season. Alec Bohm blasted his first career grand slam in a 10-7 win in the team’s season opener.
Tulane swept a series against Wright State at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium to start 3-0 for the first time since 2014.
USF ace Shane McClanahan pitched six shutout innings, collecting 11 strikeouts and allowing just three hits to guide the Bulls to a season-opening win over No. 6 North Carolina on Feb. 16.
After being rained out on Friday, Memphis' pitching staff held a conference-best 1.00 ERA on the way to winning a series over Western Kentucky.
