Cincinnati, Memphis and Tulane student-athletes take home final indoor track & field weekly honors


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the final winners of the league’s weekly indoor track and field honors of 2018 for the week ending February 18.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Aaron Persinger * Sr. * Memphis * Des Moines, Wash.
Persinger earned the second 55-meter hurdles title of his career on Friday at the Redhawks Invitational, running a personal-record time of 7.67 in the preliminary round. The senior continues to reach new heights in the hurdles this year after winning the 60-meter hurdles at the SIU Don DeNoon Invitational and running a personal record 60-meter hurdle time at the Music City Challenge.  
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Bridgid Selfors * Fr. * Tulane * Old Saybrook, Conn.
Selfors won the 3,000-meter run at the LSU Twilight Invitational on Friday to close out the regular season. Competing on a flat track, she earned first place with a time of 10:15.97 (10:14.18 converted), securing her second title this season.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Luke Vaughn * Gr. * Memphis * East Peoria, Ill.
Vaughn was the top collegiate finisher in both the shot put and weight throw at the Redhawks Invitational on Friday. Both winning marks were a season-best for Vaughn, as he threw for a distance of 17.91 meters (58’9.25”) to place first in the shot put and won the weight throw with a distance of 18.59 meters (61’0”). Vaughn enters The American Championships ranked No. 2 in the league in the shot put.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Annette Echikunwoke * Sr. * Cincinnati * Pickerington, Ohio
Echikunwoke capped her regular season with another record-breaking performance in the weight throw. Her season-best toss of 24.78m (81' 3.75") leads the NCAA this season and is No. 3 in the world. The toss pushed her up to No. 2 all-time in NCAA history and is the fourth-longest collegiate distance ever recorded. The senior was also named this week’s USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week.
