PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American’s baseball teams are off to a 20-11 start to the 2018 season and prepare for 27 games this weekend. The conference’s .645 winning percentage ranks third among the 31 Division I conferences.
- At the early stages of the season, several American teams hold top-5 national statistical rankings. Houston is No. 1 in strikeouts per 9 innings (14.8) and No. 2 with an 11.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. ECU leads the NCAA with six sacrifice flies. UCF has the fifth-most stolen bases with 11, while Wichita State's 10.7 runs per game ranks is fifth in scoring. The Shockers have the second-most doubles per game in the nation with 4.33. Memphis is one of three teams in the nation to have a shutout at this point in the year.
- ECU, Tulane and Wichita State all swept their three-game series to start 2018, while Cincinnati, No. 22 Houston and No. 25 UConn each went 2-1.
- The Pirates are averaging eight runs per game and have won four in a row after a 7-2 win at Campbell on Wednesday night.
- The American has three wins against ranked opponents this year with three of the games going to extra innings. UCF defeated No. 15 Virginia, 6-3, while USF took down No. 6 North Carolina, 4-3 last Friday.
- Last Sunday, UConn and Cincinnati each defeated a team receiving votes in a national poll in 10 innings on the road. The Huskies outlasted Georgia Tech, 9-7, as the Bearcats won 7-4 against San Diego.
- Wichita State reached double-figure runs and hits in each of its three wins at McNeese State to begin its inaugural American Athletic Conference season. Alec Bohm blasted his first career grand slam in a 10-7 win in the team’s season opener.
- Tulane swept a series against Wright State at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium to start 3-0 for the first time since 2014.
