Highlights

Memphis 6, UMBC 0
A complete game, no-hit shutout by senior pitcher Molly Smith propelled the University of Memphis softball team to a 6-0 victory over UMBC on Friday afternoon. It's the second no-hitter of the season for Memphis and first complete game no-hitter for Smith. Memphis improves to 5-4 on the year. In the top of the sixth, Memphis scored five runs on six hits including freshman Riley Walker's first collegiate home run. Walker's pinch hit home run wasn't the only time Memphis capitalized with help off the bench as Kendall Lee ignited the inning with a pinch-hit lead-off single to center. Smith had the game in control from the start with a pair of UMBC strikeouts. Her only blemishes against the Retrievers were a hit by pitch in the third and a walk in the fourth. She finished with 10 strikeouts in her third win of the year.

Houston 8, Yale 0
Houston scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap an 8-0 run-rule win over Yale in its home opener on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium. In the circle, junior Savannah Heebner improved to 3-1 behind her first shutout of the season and 10th overall of her career. She limited Yale to just three hits, while walking one and striking out four in a complete-game effort, her third of the season. The Houston offense turned in 14 hits as a team, highlighted by a trio of multi-hit performances. Junior right fielder Maya Thomas finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while senior left fielder Kaylin Crumpton also turned in a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI. The three hits apiece tie career highs for the corner outfielders. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Queen finished 2-for-4 with a career-high three RBI. Cougars Sarah Barker, Breezy Burton, Savannah Heebner, Aspen Howie, Arielle James and Caela Kincade all recorded hits, respectively.

Tulsa 8, Dartmouth 0; Tulsa 7, UIC 2
Tulsa picked up a pair of victories on Friday, as the Golden Hurricane offense produced double-digit hits in both contests, while the Tulsa pitching staff did not allow an earned run on the day. Shelby Estocado and Sarah Briers each produced four hits during the day, while Estocado drove in a season-high four runs against Dartmouth. Tulsa struck first against the Dartmouth with two runs in the bottom of the first. Estocado singled in a run and Haley Meinen doubled home another with two outs for the early lead. The Hurricane tacked on another run to make it 3-0 on Estocado's double in the third. The cushion was more than enough for pitcher Samantha Pochop, who allowed just one hit and a pair of walks to go along with four strikeouts in four innings. She was relieved by Madison Higley in the fifth and the sophomore tossed two scoreless innings, yielding just a walk, with two strikeouts. The Tulsa offense then ended the game with a five-run bottom of the sixth for the 8-0 run-rule.
In the second game of the day, the Hurricane again got a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Tulsa extended the lead to 4-0 with two more in the fourth when Julia Hollingsworth dropped a run-scoring single to left and Stafford lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. The Hurricane then added a run in the fifth on Mikayla Whitten's sac fly and another in the sixth on an error for a 6-0 advantage. Tulsa pitcher Emily Watson scattered six hits in six shutout innings and notched six strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the campaign. Neal pushed across another run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-0. Meinen pitched the final inning and allowed a pair of unearned runs on one hit, but the Flames would get no closer as the junior closed the door for the 7-2 final.

UCF 4, Penn State 0; Western Carolina 7, UCF 3
UCF dropped the first contest of the day on Friday, 7-3, against the Western Carolina Catamounts, then picked up a 4-0 shutout victory over Penn State for their first win against the Nittany Lions in program history to wrap up the day. The Knights collected six hits and a three-run fourth inning against the Western Carolina as Hayley Bejarano recorded a hit, an RBI and a run, while Megan Greenwell also registered a hit and an RBI. The Catamounts struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Knights answered with three runs of their own in the fourth. Western Carolina clawed back in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run and a single to take the lead and the win, 7-3. Damara Begin got the start for the Knights and threw 4.1 innings giving up five hits. With the loss, she is 2-1 on the season.
Against Penn State, Alea White picked up her fifth win of the season pitching a complete game allowing five hits and only one walk without giving up a run. Courtney Rotton produced a double and a run scored in the victory, while Brooke Barlow brought in two runs on one hit and Brewer and Kaitlyn Jensen each went 1-for-2. In the bottom of the fourth, the Knights got on the board first after Brewer scored on a wild pitch. In the next inning, the Knights took advantage of Penn State miscues after Rotton stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the Nittany Lions putting the Knights ahead, 2-0. The Knights struck again in the bottom of the sixth after Barlow singled up the middle plating Kaylee Misiti and Kendyl Lange extending the Knights lead to 4-0.

USF 7, Fordham 2; Drake 4, USF 1
The Bulls split the first day of the USF tournament with a 7-4 victory over Fordham, and a 4-1 loss to Drake.  Samantha Worrell and Cassidy Boyle led the Bulls to a 7-4 win over Fordham in a doubleheader split on Friday, as USF utilized 12 hits and no errors in its win over Fordham. The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer, but USF lead off in the second inning with three straight singles to put the tying runners on base. Worrell scored on a wild pitch, followed by Boyle, who went home a sacrifice fly. The pair continued their power in the third inning when Worrell hit a two-run rocket, followed by a solo homer from Boyle to give the Bulls a 5-2 lead going into the fourth inning. Redshirt junior Mia Fung and sophomore Brooke Hartman would each score to seal a 7-4 victory.
The Bulls fell, 4-1, to Drake in their second game, as a three-run homerun and a sacrifice fly to left field gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 jump on USF. The Bulls got on the board in the fifth inning when junior Lindsey Devitt hit a solo home run, her second of the season, sixth of her career.

Ball State 4, ECU 1; St. Francis 2, ECU 0
ECU fell twice to begin the Pirate Invitational Friday evening at the ECU Softball Stadium, dropping a 4-1 decision to Ball State before coming up short against Saint Francis in a 2-0 pitchers' duel. Scoring was scarce early against Ball State until the Pirates broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of redshirt sophomore infielder Tate McClellan. ECU threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the fifth but, with the bases loaded, a fly ball out to center field ended the inning. The Cardinals stole the contest in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits – including a leadoff home run by Haley Dominique – to clinch the three-run victory.
Saint Francis jumped on top in the first inning when Hayley Norton hit a one-out solo home run to stake the Red Flash to a 1-0 lead. The Pirates looked to respond in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases, but a grounder back to the pitcher terminated the threat. Saint Francis added a run in the top of the second on a RBI double by Cheyenne McKee, leading 2-0 through two complete innings. ECU could manage just one hit the rest of the way as the Red Flash cruised to the two-run win.

Ohio State 4, Wichita State 3; Wichita State 7, Texas 5
Wichita State squared off in a pair of competitive contests on Friday, first falling to Ohio State before a comeback victory over Texas. The Shockers lost via a two-out two-run walk-off home run for the second time this season after leading the No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes until the last out of the game. Already up a run, the Shockers made it 3-0 in the third inning with Laurie Derrico's sacrifice fly to right field and Caitlin Bingham’s RBI single back up the middle. Ohio State cut into the lead with a two-run homer in the fourth inning before the nationally ranked Buckeyes completed the comeback in the seventh when last season's third team All-American Lilli Piper connected on a two-run walk-off homer to give the Shockers a 4-3 loss. Down 4-0 against Texas, the Shockers responded and scored seven of the game’s final eight runs. A two-run double by Derrico in the third inning cut into the deficit, and then a three-run double by Ryleigh Buck tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth. Wichita State took the lead for good with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the fifth, while Shockers relief pitcher Bailey Klitzke allowed just one hit over the final 4 2/3 innings during the comeback to earn the win.
