UConn and ECU earn weekly baseball honors


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending Feb. 26.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zac Susi * Jr. * C * UConn
Susi knocked in five runs, as the Huskies went 2-1 on the road to clinch a series at Southeastern Louisiana. The junior catcher had at least one base hit in each game, recording two multi-hit performances. He batted .429 (6-for-14) with a .429 on base percentage, a .500 slugging percentage and one double.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Trey Benton * So. * RHP * ECU
Benton set the tone for what came to be an outstanding weekend for ECU, pitching six innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, holding No. 6 North Carolina to one run (unearned) on two hits in a 2-1 win in the series opener. The right hander retired the side in order four times in six innings and had at least one strikeout in each inning. He improved to 2-0 on the year.
 
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL  
Rylan Thomas * So. * 1B * UCF
Thomas led the Knights’ offense, collecting eight hits, three RBIs and four runs through four games, including a weekend sweep over Savannah State. He batted .533 (8-for-15) with a .632 on base percentage and .600 slugging percentage.
 
Chris Holba * Jr. * RHP * ECU
Holba threw seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and scattered two hits to help ECU defeat No. 6 North Carolina 12-0 in the series finale on Sunday. The right hander fanned at least one batter in each of the first six innings and had multiple punch outs in the second and fourth frames, improving to 2-0 on the year.
 
Trey Cumbie * Jr. * LHP * Houston
The reigning conference Pitcher of the Year registered his second straight game with double-digit strikeouts after recording 10 Ks through 6.2 scoreless innings in a 15-inning Game 1 battle at No. 13 Cal State Fullerton. The southpaw allowed just one hit during his outing.
 
Tyler Dietrich * Jr. * C * USF
Dietrich went 7-for-14 in a 2-2 week, helping USF to its first series win of the year over Fordham. He recorded three doubles, three RBIs, a .714 slugging percentage and a .533 on base percentage. Dietrich went 4-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 2 of the weekend series with the Rams.
 
Alec Bohm * Jr. * 3B * Wichita State
Bohm hit .556 (5-for-9) through a weekend sweep over Omaha in the Shockers’ home-opening series. He had a double and a home run to fuel a 1.000 slugging percentage. Wichita State (6-0) remains undefeated through two series this year.
