Highlights
Ten indoor track and field teams from around the American Athletic Conference opened their February season and competed in nine meets over the weekend. Top finishes, NCAA qualifiers, school records and personal records highlighted the action from Feb. 2-3.
- The Bearcats posted 22 personal bests while adding 17 marks to the program's all-time Top 10 ledger, including two more school records, as action came to a close inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M campus in College Station on Saturday. The women’s team placed second, while the men were third in the scored event. Overall, the Bearcats secured wins in eight events with the women winning six and the men two.
Annette Echikunwoke swept the throws as she was victorious in the weight throw (22.27m/73-00.75) and the shot put (15.95m/52-04.00) while Cincinnati also claimed wins in both vertical events as Loretta Blaut remained undefeated on the season by winning the high jump with a meet-record clearance (1.84m/6-00.50) and Brooke Catherine captured the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 4.12m (13-06.25), the No. 4 mark in program history.
Irati Mitxelena won the triple jump, using a bounce of 12.48m (40-11.50) in the fifth round to take the gold. On the men's side, Austin Edwards claimed the long jump with a PR of 7.62m (25-00.00), the No. 5 mark in program history, while Adrian Valles captured the pole vault, clearing a height of 5.37m (17-07.25). Bryana Robinson (women's 400m) and Alex Bloom (men's heptathlon) record the top marks in Cincinnati history in their respective event.
- The UConn men placed second in the New England Championships. UConn dominated the 3000-meter run with Michael O'Donnell capturing first place with a time of 8:24.55 and Eric Van Der Els (4th) and Will Brisman (5th) finished in the top five. Malik Snead landed another first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 15.62 meters. The Huskies also won the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays.
- UConn’s Susan Aneno ran a national qualifying time of 2:05:16 in the 800m race to place first on Saturday afternoon at the Scarlet and White Invitational.
- Both the men’s and women’s ECU squads took second place at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on the campus of Penn State University. The teams combined for nine first place finishes against stiff competition, including top-25 teams.
- Houston’s Elijah Hall broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, on Saturday, in College Station, Texas. crossed the line in 20.51 to win the race and clock the second fastest time in the NCAA and third-fastest in the world this season, his second top-2 mark in the nation (6.60; 60-meter dash) this year. Kahmari Montgomery took home Houston’s second victory of the afternoon, when he won the 400-meter dash competition. Montgomery entered with a personal best of 46.83.
- Maddie Brown stole the show for Houston in a short opening day of the meet inside Gilliam Track Stadium. Brown set a new personal best by over 30 seconds in the 5,000-meter run, when she posted a time of 16:53.99 to win the event. Samiyah Samuels took silver in the women’s long jump. Samuels used her first attempt to jump a personal best 20-2.25 (6.15m) and move to No. 19 in the nation.
- Davon DeMoss, Nicole Lawson and Aaron Persinger all notched first-place performances Memphis track and field squads in Saturday action at the 2018 Don DeNoon Invitational. DeMoss won his title in the men's 60 meters in a time of 6.74, and Persinger took the men's 60-meter hurdles crown in a time of 8.18. Lawson won the women's triple jump title with a 39-2.5 (11.95m) mark.
- USF capped off its third team event of the indoor season with three event victories and 16 top-five finishes Saturday at the Akron Invitational. D'angelo Ennis won the men's triple jump with a mark of 49-5.00 that ranks fourth on USF's all-time indoor triple jump chart. Imani Carmouche won the women's high jump blue division with a top total of 5-7. Kaytlyn Gill finished atop the women's triple jump blue division with a mark of 38-8.25 that ranks 10th in USF indoor history.
- Tulane’s Bridgid Selfors won the 3000m while sprinters freshman Kyah Loyd, sophomore Brandi Hughes and junior Jessica Duckett shined at the Bayou Bengal Invitational Friday inside the Carl Maddox Field House.
- Wichita State's men's and women's won the Herm Wilson Invitational and junior Kelsey Slawson set a school record in the shot put. Slawson set a school record winning the shot put with a mark of 15.29m/50-2. Stan Skwarlo III won the one mile for the men. Natalie Halfman won the women's 600m with a time of 1:36.43.
- Rosie Chamberlain captured the title in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:10.05 for UCF at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Saturday.
- Aisha Brown earned the individual high jump title for Temple at Saturday's Villanova Invitational hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Collectively, the Owls earned two top-three finishes and performed several personal bests. Brown's high jump of 1.70m is a new personal best for the freshman.
