Nebraska 3, Tulsa 2
Taylor Otte's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh pushed Nebraska past Tulsa on Saturday afternoon, the second day of the Jayhawk Invitational.
Julia Hollingsworth went 3-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to 14 games for the Golden Hurricane (14-9), while
Shelby Estocado kept her hitting streak, now at 15 games, alive with a 1-for-3 outing.
Emily Watson took the loss in the circle with three runs allowed on five hits and six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Tristen Edwards put the Cornhuskers (14-7) ahead early with a solo homer to left-center field. However, Watson would not allow another Nebraska hit until the bottom of the sixth. That is where the score stood until the bottom of the seventh. Watson retired the first two batters of the inning before the Huskers rallied. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for Otte, who then plated the tying and winning runs with a single.
Western Michigan 6, UCF 3
The Broncos loaded the bases in the second inning with one out but the Knights ended the Western Michigan threat after grabbing a strikeout and a fly ball to left field. Western Michigan put the pressure on the Knights in the third after plating two runs followed by a grand slam to go up 6-0 on UCF. The Knights answered in the fourth with three runs of their own after Courtney Rotton drew a walk and Johnson on a Bronco mistake bringing up Kyra Klarkowski. The sophomore smacked a single to left center to drive in Rotton and
Jazmine Esparza followed with a double to left plating Aubrey Johnson and Klarkowski. The two-out rally wouldn't be enough for the Knights as they dropped their first game of the Showcase to Western Michigan, 6-3.
USF 9, Iona 1
The Gaels (6-6) jumped ahead early with an RBI single in the top of the second inning, but USF (16-12) responded with the same by senior
Lauren Evans sending home Mia Fung. USF surged ahead in the three innings that followed with nine more runs to end the game with a walk-off in the fifth inning. Junior
Samantha Worrell hit a 2-RBI double in the third frame and made it home on an error to give USF a 4-1 lead. The Bulls' contagious hitting spread even more in the fourth inning when Evans led off with a single, and junior
Lindsey Devitt batted in two more with a triple to left field, her first of the season. Fung hit the same spot as Devitt for two RBI but made it over the fence for her third home run of the weekend. Sophomore
AnaMarie Bruni showcased her speed and excellent base-running as she pulled off two straight steals and took advantage of an error by the catcher scoring the ninth and final run in the fifth inning.
Oklahoma State 8, UConn 0
Sophomore utility player Carissa Brizzi recorded a pinch-hit single in the fifth inning, her first hit since suffering an injury on Feb. 10 in Jacksonville, as the Huskies dropped an 8-0 decision to Oklahoma State in the first game on Saturday. The Cowgirls scored all eight runs in the first three innings, resulting in the mercy-rule victory. Sophomore pitcher Katie Koshes struck-out four batters in 2.2 innings of relief, following the start of senior pitcher Chelsea Eckert (1-1). Sophomore Devon Casazza and freshman Hollis Wivell each drew walks, but were stranded on base. The Huskies left three runners on against Oklahoma State pitcher Logan Simunek, who recorded the complete-game shutout. Oklahoma State tallied four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single by Whitney Whitehorn. In the third inning, home runs by Vanessa Shippy and Randee O’Donnell pushed the deficit to eight.
Memphis 9, Bowling Green 1
Another complete game effort by
Molly Smith and 14 team hits led the University of Memphis softball team to a 9-1 run-rule victory over Bowling Green State Saturday afternoon. Memphis has now won the last eight games as it improves to 15-5 on the year. The 15-5 start is the best start for Memphis since the 2011 season. Memphis scattered its runs out throughout five of the six innings played. The Tigers first capitalized in bottom of the second inning by scoring three runs on five hits. The hits kept on rolling for the Tigers as
Brooke Lee launched her fifth home run of the season in the third inning to put Memphis up 5-1. The Tigers finished with 14 hits including six players with a multi-hit contest.
Molly Smith hurled her eighth complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out five.
Wichita State 3, Missouri State 1
Bailey Lange's 200th career strikeout helped the Wichita State softball team to a 3-1 victory over Missouri State on day one of the Wichita State Tournament at Wilkins Stadium.
Madison Perrigan's home run led the offense with
Mackenzie Wright going 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles. Lange went 12-up and 12-down for a perfect first four innings, giving up her first hit in the fifth. Overall she had nine strikeouts to match her season high for the third time. In the bottom of the second
Caitlin Bingham led off for the Shockers with a hit by a pitch. Perrigan, who was 7-for-15 at the plate entering the game, crushed the ball over the right-center fence for her second home run in two games to give Wichita State an early 2-0 lead. Both teams went scoreless through the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the sixth the Shockers added an insurance run with a fielder's choice getting Wright home on a
Paige Luellen hit.
UCF 8, Southern Illinois 3
The Knights wasted no time to get ahead of Southern Illinois in game two after Rotton ripped a triple to right field to knock in Megan Greenwell and strike first with a 1-0 lead. UCF continued to tack on the runs as Bejarano led of the fifth inning with a walk and Lange replaced her on the bases. Greenwell stepped up to the plate and delivered a single, and Rotton was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jensen. The freshman singled to knock in Greenwell and Lange to go up, 3-0, on the Salukis. The Knights weren't done as Johnson singled to score
Kaylee Misiti, who pinch ran for Kaitlyn Jensen, and Rotton to extend their lead to 5-0. The offense continued to sore for the Knights in the sixth inning when Esparza blasted a solo home run to left center and UCF was quickly up by six. The Salukis mustered up three runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits to put pressure on the Knights, but UCF answered in the top of the seventh after Rotton ripped a shot to left field for a solo homer and Jensen followed with her sixth home run of the season to make it 8-3.
UConn 7, Purdue 1
A five-run third inning sparked a 7-1 victory for UConn over Purdue, avenging a loss to the Boilermakers in the 2017 season. Stanley and Wivell each had two hits, while Stockley allowed just one run in a complete-game win. Following a solo home run by Purdue in the first inning, the Huskies scored seven unanswered runs over the next five innings – bouncing back from a defeat earlier in the day to Oklahoma State. Five different players had hits for the Huskies, while four added RBI. In her first game out of the clean-up spot, freshman Sam Barnett recorded an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game, 1-1. Sophomore Devon Casazza added an RBI walk with the bases loaded to give UConn a 2-1 lead, while freshman Maura Glatczak and senior Ryne Nakama reached on consecutive fielding errors by Purdue – plating two more runs. In the fourth inning, Casazza drove in her second run of the game with a double to center field – scoring redshirt freshman Olivia Sappington – and reaching base for her sixth-straight game. Carli Cutler smacked her home run in the fifth, capping-off UConn’s scoring. Stockley was masterful for the Huskies, striking out four batters and scattering seven hits over seven innings. She stranded nine runners on base for Purdue, including the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh frames.
USF 6, Loyola Chicago 3
USF finished a game in regulation for the first time in six competitions on Saturday night. The teams were scoreless through two full innings, but Loyola-Chicago scored in the top of the third. Senior
Amber Atkinson drove in two runs in the bottom of the third with a triple to right center, and USF continued its scoring streak with three runs on three hits in the fourth frame. Worrell and Evans each slammed a single to the field to get on base, and senior
Astin Donovan was hit by a pitch to reach first. Devitt powered through another at-bat with an RBI double, and Donovan's speed got her home on a wild pitch to end the game. The Bulls lead, 5-1, heading into the sixth inning where the Ramblers tacked on two more runs. Devitt had a near-perfect day at the plate going 4-for-5 over two games. She RBI singled to solidify USF's 6-3 win, and junior
Cheyenne Eggens earned a save as she held the Ramblers in the seventh with two straight strikeouts. Senior JoJo McGill earned her fourth win of the season over the Ramblers.
Northwestern 5, Houston 4
In the third, The Wildcats plated one run on an error in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead before Northwestern added three runs via a two-run home run and an error in the fourth. However, Queen responded with a leadoff homer in the bottom frame to make it 4-1. With one out in the fifth, freshman
Charese Wyatt drew a pinch-hit walk in the fifth. Crumpton and Queen each followed with blasts to left field to tie the game at 4-4. The Wildcats hit a solo home run in the seventh for the 5-4 final.
Wichita State 8, Western Illinois 7
Paige Luellen's grand slam lifted the Wichita State softball team to a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Western Illinois in game two of the Wichita State Tournament at Wilkins Stadium. Both teams went scoreless through the first but the Leatherneck bats would come alive in the second. Despite a leadoff strikeout, a walk and double got runners on third and second with a single getting two home. Another walk ended the day for
Caitlin Bingham in the circle with
Hailey Martinez her replacement.
Iowa State 4, Houston 1
