Baseball gears up for 40 games this week

  • The American's baseball teams improved their combined nonconference winning percentage to .607 (82-53) after a strong outing last week, which included three wins over top-25 opponents. The conference gears up for 40 games this week with UConn, Memphis, Tulane and Wichita State taking on ranked teams.
 
  • UCF took down No. 1 Florida in a two-game midweek series before defeating Siena three times over the weekend to extend its winning streak to 12 in a row. The Knights appeared on all five national rankings lists this week, coming in at No. 19 on Baseball America's poll. UCF's pitching staff owns the No. 13 ERA in the nation (2.39), while holding teams to 6.61 hits per game, which is ninth in the NCAA. The Knights have the sixth-best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the country at 3.74 and are tied for the most shutouts this season with five.
 
  • ECU has continued to receive national recognition on multiple polls with its highest ranking coming from USA Today's Coaches' Poll at No. 17. Coming off a 4-0 week, the Pirates will host VCU and Elon midweek and face Maryland in a three-game series this weekend. ECU's starting pitching is sporting a 2.36 ERA through 15 games. They have allowed 23 runs (20 earned) on 59 hits with 74 strikeouts to 19 walks while holding opposing hitters to a .215 clip.
 
  • Winning eight of its last 10 games, Wichita State holds the top overall record in the conference at 12-2 and is ranked No. 20 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll. The Shockers will hit the road, facing Missouri on Tuesday before traveling to Creighton for a three-game weekend series. Wichita State is coming off a sweep over UT-Arlington and is 3-1 in away contests this year. The Shockers are 6-for-8 with the bases loaded this season with five grand slams. Third baseman Alec Bohm is 3-for-3 with three grand slams with the bases loaded.
 
  • USF's David Villar is batting a conference-best .411, while starter Shane McClanahan has pitched 24.2 innings without allowing an earned run this year. The Bulls have 47 doubles, which rank No. 4 in the NCAA and lead the conference with 157 hits.
