Highlights
UConn, Houston, Memphis and No. 26 Wichita State each captured Tuesday night wins against nonconference opponents to start the week off on a positive note. The American’s baseball teams will play four more midweek games before the start of conference play this weekend.
Memphis pounded out 14 runs on 14 hits and pitched the second shutout of the season in a 14-0 win over Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers have won back-to-back games for just the second time this season. Outfielder Tyler Webb had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He hit a double and a triple.
No. 26 Wichita State scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch to defeat Oklahoma 2-1. Outfielder Luke Ritter went 2-for-4, while shortstop Trey Vickers went 1-for-3 with a home run. After allowing a run in the opening inning, the Shockers’ bullpen tossed eight shutout frames.
UConn posted a four-run 10th inning to defeat Central Connecticut 7-3. The Huskies earned their third straight win on the road. Thad Phillips (3-for-4) capped a career-day with a three-run homer in the 10th.
Houston used a three-run seventh inning to come-from-behind and win, 3-1, over Lamar for its fourth straight victory at Schroeder Park on Tuesday. The Cougars improved to 10-3 at home this season. Carter Henry picked up his first save of his career in his 10th relief appearance this season, as the pitching staff recorded its sixth straight game with at least seven strikeouts.
No. 20 UCF scored three runs in the eighth inning, but its rally came up short, as the Knights dropped its series opener at No. 5 Florida State 6-4. The Knights and the Seminoles will wrap up their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.
