Houston’s Hollis and Wichita State’s Vickers Named 2018 Baseball Senior CLASS Award Candidates

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Houston second baseman Connor Hollis and Wichita State shortstop Trey Vickers were named 2018 Baseball Senior CLASS Award Candidates as announced by the organization on Wednesday.

Thirty NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates today for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Hollis has played in 19 games, making 18 starts for the Cougars this season, as he leads the team with 17 runs scored and eight doubles, which rank third in The American. Batting .284, he has 21 hits, seven RBIs and holds a .977 fielding percentage. The senior has been named to the conference’s All-Academic team four times and was a third team All-Conference selection as a freshman. Through 171 career games, Hollis ha 101 runs scored, 163 hits, 27 doubles, six triples, three home runs and 60 RBIs with a .968 fielding percentage.

Vickers holds a .289 career batting average with 81 runs scored, 15 doubles, 146 hits and a .954 fielding percentage. Upon returning to the Shockers’ lineup a couple weeks ago, he has compiled six hits, three RBIs and two homers through six games.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 College World Series in June.
