Highlights
USF 9, UConn 0
A grand slam by senior Astin Donovan highlighted a six-run fourth inning in the Bulls 9-0 shutout over UConn (13-19, 0-3). USF swept the opening series of conference play and advanced to 3-0 in The American. The Bulls (25-13, 3-0) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when junior Macy Cook 2-RBI singled with a blooper to right center. Freshman Jasmine Haynes stole second and forced an error by the second baseman to help score Samantha Worrell. USF loaded the bases and scored two runs on balls in the fourth inning before Donovan sent her first career grand slam over the right field wall to seal the Bull's 9-0 run-rule victory. In the circle, freshman Georgina Corrick earned her eighth win and walked just one batter in four innings of work.
UCF 2, Tulsa 1
Courtney Rotton delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Knights the 2-1 victory and the series sweep over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday afternoon. Alea White received the third consecutive start in the circle for UCF, allowing one earned run and striking out six for her 16th win of the season. Her three-straight starts in the series is the first time in program history that a pitcher has started every game in a three-game series. The Knights improve to 21-12 overall on the season and begin conference play 3-0. It was a duel in the circle for the majority of the matchup with Tulsa's Emily Watson and White each putting up zeros on the scoreboard through six. White came up big in the fourth inning, striking out the side. She tallied 13 strikeouts total in the series. Tulsa broke through first, finally plating a run off White in the sixth. The Golden Hurricane added a pair of singles and scored on a sacrifice fly in foul territory to push ahead of the Knights, 1-0. Later in the frame, Denali Schappacher drew a one-out walk to put the tying run on first. Aubrey Johnson then flied out to right field to bring Rotton to the plate with two outs. With a 1-1 count, Rotton crushed her third home run of the year to left field to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. White retired in the side in the seventh to complete the sweep.
Memphis 10, Wichita State 7
The University of Memphis softball team held off a late inning push by Wichita State Sunday afternoon to defeat the Shockers by a score of 10-7 in eight innings. The Tigers improve to 23-8 on the year and 2-1 in American Athletic Conference play with a midweek doubleheader coming up Tuesday. Memphis took an early lead over Wichita State after Kyler Trosclair Klatt recorded a two-RBI single and Addison Maxwell drew a bases loaded walk. The Shockers answered two innings later with a two-run shot to cut the Memphis lead down to one, 3-2. A four-run fourth inning which including Ashley Threatt's team-leading sixth home run of the season put Memphis up 7-2 over the Shockers. Two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, however, combined with three in the sixth by Wichita State tied up the contest at 7-7. The Shockers threatened to score in the home half of the seventh, but a big strikeout looking by freshman Mariah Nichols got the Tigers out of the jam. A single up the middle by Kendall Lee that was extended two more bases due to a fielding error by the Shockers centerfielder resulted in two runs crossing the plate in the top of the eighth. Memphis added one more insurance run after Trosclair Klatt drove in Lee for her fourth RBI of the contest. Mariah Nichols finished the contest in relief for Molly Smith and improved to 9-4 on the year. Smith and Nichols combined for seven strikeouts in eight innings of work.
