Highlights
Nation-leading marks, top finishes, personal records and school records highlighted The American’s outdoor track and field programs over the weekend.
- Houston recorded five nation-leading times and two world-leading marks at Rice and Prairie View. he squad of Mario Burke, Elijah Hall, John Lewis III and Cameron Burrell ran the 4x100-meter relay in 38.95 to win the event, beating several Team USA squads. Lewis III would be back on the track later in the afternoon to compete individually in the 100-meter dash, where he won after clocking a wind-aided time of 10.13 for the top time in the nation. The Cougars also won the 4200-meter relay with Burke, Burrell and Hall were joined by All-American Kahmari Montgomery running it in 1:21.19. Quivell Jordan ran the fastest time in the nation this season in the 400-meter hurdles. Jordan finished the full-lap hurdles race in 51.11 to take the victory. Brian Barraza returned in Cougar red in a big way, setting the program record and cruising to a win in the steeple chase in 8:41.58, which is No. 1 in the nation this year.
The Houston men and women continued to record NCAA top-25 marks and capture meet victories. Samiyah Samuels tallied the women's first victory of the day with a win in the long jump. Samuels used her third attempt to travel a personal-best 20-7.25 (6.29m) to claim the event and move to third in the NCAA in the early season.
- USF had a big day two, securing three event victories and 19 total top five finishes. USF student-athletes also placed five marks on the school outdoor top-10 charts. Freshman Rania Samhouri got the Bulls a victory in the day's first event, taking the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:28.07. Zach Diaczynsky won the shot put (52-10.00), and the women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Shenica Bazile, Destiny Fairley, Krysten Golden and Jada Massie took home gold in their event.
- SMU distance runner Hannah Miller claimed first place and broke the meet’s record in the 3,000-meter run with her time of 9:35.67 at the Arkansas Spring Break Invite. Thrower Tochi Nlemchi won her second straight shot put with a toss of 15.87 meters (52-0.75). Alison Esparza claimed first in the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal record time of 11:02.94.
-Tulane’s sprinters and hurdlers had strong outings in their events and pole vaulter Rebekah Markel set a new outdoor personal record en route to winning the event, highlighting Tulane's trip to Houston. Jessica Duckett and Brandi Hughes finished second - 13.51 (-0.5) - and third - 13.75 (-0.5) - in the 100m hurdles, respectively, before they took the top two spots in the 400m hurdles. Maya Harewood won the women's 400m race with a time of 54.79. Markel won the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.05 meters.
- UCF’s Rosie Chamberlain won her second event of the outdoor season at the Bulls Invitational, this time taking the title in the 1500-meter run at 4:35.89.
- Tulsa collected six top-three finishes at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. Aaliyah Birmingham picked up a third-place finish in the 200-meters, with a time of 23.74. Kiarra Reed came in second in the 400-meter hurdles, as she posted a time of 59.70. Grey Howard notched a third-place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 1:50.35. Braydon Rennie was the lone Tulsa runner in the men's open 1,500-meters. He finished with a time of 3:57.47 and finished second.
- Memphis’ Mona Jaidi claimed the school record mark in the discus with a 170-8.75 (52.03m) throw. On Saturday, Memphis won three titles in the men's and women's shot put and the men's 4x400-meter relay. The Tigers had 11 top-three performances. Rafael Vallery won the first outdoor shot put title of his career Saturday. It was the second outdoor crown of his career, as he won the discus at the 2017 Memphis Invitational.
- ECU track and field team opened its outdoor campaign at the Weems Baskin Invitational this weekend, winning four event titles and capturing 12 top-three finishes. Dean Abushouk leads the American Athletic Conference in the 5,000m while junior Ryan Davis owns the top mark in the league in the hammer. They are both currently ranked 15th in the NCAA East Region. Courtney Warner won the 100-meter title at 11.49. She currently ranks eighth in the NCAA East Region in the 100m and 25th in the 200m.
- For Wichita State, the Shockers concluded action at the Arkansas Spring Break Invite in style. The men's team swept the javelin, Austin Corley ran an NCAA leading time in the 400m hurdles and the women set four total personal records. Senior All-American Damien Odle led the men in the javelin winning the event with a throw of 67.87m/222-8. Corley won the 400m hurdles with an NCAA leading time of 51.25. Winny Koskei finished the 3000m in second place with a personal best time and ninth fastest time in program history at 9:57.04.
