Temple's Second Varsity 8 Claims Boat of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of a strong season-opening performance on Saturday, Temple’s Second Varsity 8 was named American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week on Monday.
 
The Owls’ Second Varsity 8 boat, consisting of coxswain Allie Nussbaum, Rylie Hager, Daeaijah Covert, Anna Pansky, Reilly Bonner, Gabby DiMarco, Megan Cook, Catherine Pazderski and Claire Savage, swept both of its races on the Schuylkill River. Against North Carolina, Temple powered to a narrow victory with at time of 6:37.0 to the Tar Heels’ time of 6:38.7. Later in the day, the Owls continued their momentum with an open-water win over Boston College, timing in at 6:37.7 to the Eagles’ 6:48.0.
 
Temple is back to competition this weekend, hosting the 36th Annual Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill on Saturday, March 31.

UConn
  • UConn will travel next to American foe Temple for the Murphy Cup on March 31.
Sacramento State
  • The Hornets’ Varsity 8 picked up the silver medal at the San Diego Crew Classic, the highest finish for the Hornets’ top boat at the event since 2009.
  • In the grand final, Sacramento State timed in at 7:15.35, placing ahead of boats from SMU, Loyola Marymount and Kansas State.
  • The Hornets will be idle for the next two weeks until hosting the Lake Natoma Invitational April 14-15, consisting of California, Stanford, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Brown, Alabama and San Diego. 
San Diego State
  • The Aztecs’ Varsity 8 earned the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend, timing in at 7:08.53 to top the six-team field.
  • San Diego State’s Varsity 4 took fourth in the petite final, finishing ahead of American teams SMU and Sacramento State.
  • The Aztecs will compete next on April 14 at Loyola Marymount in Marina Del Rey, Calif. 
SMU
  • SMU’s Varsity 8 took third place in the Cal Cup race at the San Diego Crew Classic, finishing behind only fellow American teams San Diego State and Sacramento State.
  • The Varsity 4 took fifth in the petite final, timing in at 8:16.70.
  • The Mustangs return to the water April 6-7 at UCF’s Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. 
UCF
  • The Knights are back this coming Saturday, hosting Miami and Wisconsin in Sarasota. 
Tulsa
  • The Golden Hurricane swept all three races in a dual regatta with Central Oklahoma this past Saturday.
  • Tulsa’s Varsity 8 took the largest margin of victory, dominating the race by 21 seconds (7:34.71).
  • Tulsa will also be at UCF in two weeks to compete in the Sunshine State invitational.
