UConn and No. 18 Wichita State each picked up midweek wins, as the conference went 2-4 on Tuesday. No. 30 Houston and Memphis each took one-run setbacks, while USF and Tulane will also look to bounce back in conference play this weekend after suffering midweek losses. The American moves to 117-75 in nonconference games this season.
Right-hander Jeff Kersten tossed 8.2 scoreless innings, scattering two hits to guide the Huskies to a 4-0 shutout at Boston College. Head coach Jim Penders collected his 500th career win, as UConn prepares to host its home-opener on Thursday against Hartford. UConn scored two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the ninth. Designated hitter Zac Susi and third baseman Michael Woodworth each had two hits, while three different Huskies recorded one RBI. Closer P.J. Poulin entered the game with runners on to make the last out and earn his seventh save of the year.
Wichita State extended its winning streak to six in a row after tacking on six runs in the sixth inning for a 9-6 win at Central Arkansas. Four Shockers had a multi-hit game, led by shortstop Trey Vickers who went 3-for-5. OF Greyson Jenista had three RBIs, two hits, two runs scored and a home run. Wichita State used four arms out of the bullpen to hold Central Arkansas to one hit and keep the scoreless through the final four frames.
