Highlights
It was a top-25 match-up, as No. 18 Wichita State defeated No. 16 ECU, 14-3, to win its inaugural American Athletic Conference game. After playing 21 consecutive road games, UConn captured its home-opener against Hartford, 9-1. Tulane edged USF to take Game 1 of the conference series. The No. 30 Houston-Cincinnati, as well as the No. 25 UCF-Memphis games each got rained out, as both series will feature doubleheaders tomorrow.
- Wichita State came out on top in its American Athletic Conference debut, defeating ECU 14-3 on the road to pick up its seventh straight win. The Shockers pounded 20 hits, good for the most in The American all year and scored in all but one inning. Nine Shockers recorded at least one single, as catcher Gunnar Troutwine (4-for-5) and third baseman Alec Bohm (4-for-5) combined for 10 RBIs. Bohm had two homers and drove in six runs. Starter Codi Heuer threw five innings and fanned seven batters. ECU was led by Bryant Packard who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. The Shockers and Pirates return to action in Greenville, N.C., tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET.
- After playing 21 consecutive games on the road, UConn defeated Hartford 9-1 to win its home opener and secure its second victory this week. The Huskes held a 1-0 lead through four innings before tacking on eight unanswered runs during the final two frames. UConn’s pitching staff held Hartford without a run through the first eight innings. Outfielder Issac Feldstein hit his eighth homer of the year in the second inning, as catcher Zac Susi and first baseman Chris Winkel each recorded two RBIs. Starter Tim Cate through 6.2 shutout innings, scattering two hits and fanning six batters. UConn will host Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. ET tomorrow.
- Right-hander Kaleb Roper tossed eight innings, scattering two runs, while fanning 10 batters, as Tulane defeated USF 3-2 on the road to capture Game 1 of the series. First baseman David Bedgood went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Green Wave. USF starter Shane McClanahan pitched six innings and registered 12 strikeouts. The series continues tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET.
