PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Eleven student-athletes from Cincinnati, ECU, Houston and SMU represented The American at the 2018 NCAA Zone Diving Championships from March 5-10. The top nine spots in the event earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships held March 21-24 at Minneapolis.
SMU's Bryce Klein used an eighth place finish on 1 meter at the NCAA Zone D Championships Tuesday night to automatically qualify for the 2018 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. The senior qualified for the evening's final in ninth place before posting a two-list total of 708.85 to climb to eighth.
With the 1-meter qualification, Klein is eligible to enter 3-meter competition with his top-12 finish on Monday. The Southlake, Texas, native finished 11th with a final score of 722.40 over two rounds. This will be Klein's first trip back to the NCAA Championships since 2016, when he advanced to the 3 meter Consolation Final. Klein is a four-time NCAA Zones qualifier, a six-time American Athletic Conference champion and a 10-time all-conference selection. He holds both the SMU and American Athletic Conference records on 1-and 3-meter.
On the women’s side, SMU freshman Katie Crown completed competition at her first NCAA Zone Diving Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the Minnesota. Crown earned her highest placement of 19th out of 47 divers in 1-meter prelims. Her 261.75 placed her just one position outside of finals qualification and was the third highest total posted by a freshman. On 3 meter, Crown placed 25th of 44 divers with a total score of 275.85.
Houston also competed at the Zone D Championships and closed out the action on Tuesday afternoon with the 3-meter dive.
Micaela Bouter posted a preliminary round score of 312.30, finishing in 11th-place to advance to the finals of the 3-Meter at Zones for the fourth consecutive year. Bouter moved on to the finals where she tacked on 302.45 more points to close out the event with a 15th-place finish. Lauren Burrell finished the day with a 33rd-place finish in the preliminaries of the 3-Meter.
Burrell scored a six-dive total of 256.80 points in her second appearance at the Diving Zones, with her highest scoring dive coming on her third attempt. Bouter finished the 1-meter dive on Monday in 12th-place with a combined total of 560.60 points, coming within four points of a berth to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Two women divers from ECU traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Zone B Championships. Alicia Roueche and Sarah Blank made the trip, competing in the 1-and-3-meter dives. Both Pirates saw their top performances in the 3-meter dive on Wednesday with Roueche capturing 19th place with a score of 263.35 and Blank taking 29th with her mark of 244.60.
UConn Senior Dan Kinney and freshman Erin Clifford competed in the NCAA A Championships at Rutgers University at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. In her first NCAA Zones, Erin Clifford finished 22nd in the 1-meter dive with a score of 231.30. In the 3-meter event Clifford scored a 244.10 landing in 23rd place.
Dan Kinney closed out his stellar UConn career with a 19th place finish in the 1-meter dive scoring a 286.80 and grabbed a 23rd place finish with a score of 277.15 in the 3-meter dive.The end of the NCAA Zone A Championships wraps up the 2017-2018 season for the Huskies.
Three Cincinnati divers competed at the NCAA Zone C Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Mitch Godar, Claire Schuermann and Ellen Posch represented the Bearcats from March 8-10. Schuermann placed 24th in the three-meter with a score of 243.75, while Posch took the 44th place spot with a score of 203.00. On the men's side, Godar improved from his 3-meter score in placement by finishing 33rd with his score of 251.00 in tthe one-meter. Posch wrapped up the meet with a total score of 387.40 to finish 18th overall in the platform dive.
