Memphis was unable to overcome early runs scored by No. 10/13 Tennessee as it fell Tuesday evening to the Lady Vols by a score of 8-0 at the Midstate Classic in Columbia, Tenn. Tennessee scored early in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers did, however, register the first hit of the ball game earlier in the inning on a single up the middle by Baylee Smith. The two teams were scoreless for the next two innings until the Lady Vols struck again. A three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth lifted Tennessee to a 5-0 lead over the Tigers. Memphis strung together a walk and a single to have runners in scoring position in the fifth, but was unable to bring Erin Parker home from third. Tennessee added its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the contest. Baylee Smith highlighted the Memphis offense as she went 2-for-3 against the ranked Lady Vols. Brooke Lee and Kyler Trosclair Klatt also registered hits for Memphis. Molly Smith was handed just her fifth loss of the season after putting in 3.2 innings of work for Memphis.
