ECU, Temple Move On To Men's Quarterfinals

DALLAS – Temple and ECU moved into the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship with first-round wins Thursday as the Owls edged SMU while the Pirates registered a shutout against UConn.
 
The American’s men’s championship continues through the April 22 final. Friday’s quarterfinal matches begin at 9 a.m. CT.

ECU 4, UConn 0
Records: ECU (22-4), UConn (4-16)

No. 7-seeded ECU and No. 10-seeded UConn met in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Championship for the third straight year, and for the third straight year, it is the Pirates who will move on to the quarterfinal round thanks to a 4-0 win Thursday morning.
 
ECU’s Vlad Anghel and Freddie McGheenan registered straight-set wins at the top of the singles ladder against UConn, and the two paired to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 decision at the No. 1 spot. Wisse Jonker also enjoyed a straight-set win in singles as he was first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5.
 
The Pirates advance in the bracket to face No. 2-seeded Tulane Friday at noon CT in the quarterfinals.

Temple 4, SMU 3
Records: Temple (13-9), SMU (9-18)

Senior Thomas Sevel won a three-set battle at No. 1 singles to break a 3-3 tie and send No. 8-seeded Temple to the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 4-3 win against No. 9-seeded SMU Thursday morning.
 
SMU had built a 3-2 lead after the Mustangs claimed the doubles point and the teams traded singles wins. SMU’s Roberto Rosales won a second-set tiebreaker to get a straight-set win at No. 5, but Temple was able to tie the score at 3-3 after Eric Biscoveanu went overtime in his striaght-set win at No. 4, taking a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory.
 
That set the stage for Sevel, who won his first set at No. 1, but saw SMU’s Tomas Vaise even the match with a 6-4 second set. The third set was tied at 5-5 before Sevel took the final two games to deliver the win for the Owls.
 
Temple moves into Friday’s quarterfinal round, where the Owls wlll face top-seeded Memphis at 9 a.m. CT. Temple and Memphis met less than a week ago as the Tigers won a 7-0 decision April 14 in Memphis.
