UCF, SMU, Tulsa, Wichita State Reach Women's Semifinals

DALLAS – UCF and Wichita State reached the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship for the first time, while Tulsa and SMU made it to the semifinals for the fourth straight year to highlight Thursday’s competition on the SMU campus.
 
UCF, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, reached the semifinals with a 4-1 win against Tulane Thursday. No. 5-seeded SMU knocked off USF, last year’s tournament champion, with a 4-2 victory in the quarterfinals, while No. 2-seeded Tulsa won a 4-1 decision against Memphis to leave the Golden Hurricane one win away from a fourth straight appearance in the final.
 
The American’s women’s championship continues through the April 21 final. Thursday’s matches begin at noon CT.

UCF 4, Tulane 1
Records: UCF (19-3), Tulane (13-11)

Top-seeded UCF won three singles matches in straight sets and took the doubles point in convincing fashion as the Knights were 4-1 winners against No. 9-seeded Tulane Thursday.
 
UCF advances to the semifinal round of The American Championship for the first time, where the Knights will face No. 5-seeded SMU Friday.
 
Ksenia Kuznetsova and Monica Matias were winners in both singles and doubles for UCF Thursday. Kuznetsova partnered with Maria Martinez for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles before she took a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. Matias joined Natalia Serrano for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles and scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

SMU’s winning streak stands at eight matches after the No. 5-seeded Mustangs took a 4-2 win against No. 4-seeded USF Thursday afternoon.
 
The Mustangs will make their fourth straight appearance in the semifinals after SMU won two second-set tiebreakers, one third-set tiebreaker and won a fourth match in three sets. Karina Traxler and Anzhelika Shapovalova were able to win in straight sets, as both claimed 7-5 tiebreaker wins in their second sets. Sarai Monarrez Yesaki gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead when she won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles.
 
Liza Buss clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a three-set win.
 
SMU will face top-seeded UCF in Friday’s semifinal round. The winner of that match will advance to its first American Athletic Conference Championship final.

Tulsa advanced to the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year as the Golden Hurricane took a 4-1 win against Memphis Thursday afternoon.
 
Tulsa won two of the three doubles matches and took three of the four singles matches that were played to completion to improve to 19-5 on the year. Tulsa’s three singles wins all came in straight sets.
 
Martha Matoula scored the clinching point at No. 4 singles and paired with Ksenia Laskutova to take a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Shura Poppe also won in both singles and doubles play as she was a straight-set winner at No. 6 singles and joined Vera Ploner for a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
 
Tulsa will face No. 3-seeded Wichita State in Friday’s semifinals. The Golden Hurricane was a 7-0 winner against the Shockers March 17 in Tulsa.

Wichita State 4, Houston 2

Marta Bellucco battled back from a one-set deficit to get the clinching point at No. 5 singles and send Wichita State to the semifinal round of its first American Women’s Tennis Championship with a 4-2 win against Houston Thursday.
 
Wichita State, which won the last eight Missouri Valley Conference titles before joining The American, will face No. 2-seeded Tulsa in Friday’s semifinals.
 
Wichita State won the doubles point and built an early 2-0 lead after Gabrila Porubin took a striaght-set win at No. 4  singles. But Houston answered with a pair of wins at the top of the ladder as Tsveta Dimitrova won a straight-set battle at No. 1 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Fatima Bizhukova, and Sveva Mazzari won in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
 
Giulia Guidetti countered with a three-set win at No. 3 to give the Shockers a 3-2 lead, but Houston remained in the match as the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches both went to third sets. With the match on Court 6 coming down to the wire, Bellucco stormed to a 6-1 third set to get the win for Wichita State.
